Jasmine Grandiflorum in Pinot Noir

Is this OT or not? I just had a lovely dinner with cousins who

brought out an incredible bottle of Pinot Noir. McHenry 2002 estate

bottled -- only 386 cases.

Right after the pour, I couldn't figure out where the smell of

Jasmine Grandiflorum was coming from. Asked my husband if he was

smelling it -- he said he thought he'd been imagining it. Then we

all sat there, noses in glasses and also found lilac -- right after

the jasmine. Over 2.5-3 hours this wonderful wine unfolded. There

was some tobacco and cedar along with many other things one

frequently finds in wines (cassis, raspberry, mitti, etc). One

cousin insisted he smelled violet. I could just barely grasp it but

it was almost muguet to me instead -- seemed to be hovering around

with the lilac.

When the glasses were empty and the bottle history, we were still

smelling it. The finish was incredible. The last drop in the

glasses was wafting roses. My husband and I were smelling a cross

between Heirloom and White Delight. One cousin was smelling either

Sterling Silver or Angel Face. But we were definitely all smelling

roses. I've never smelled so many different florals in one wine. If

any of you get a chance to seek out a bottle of this, I highly

recommend it. What a fantastic thing to have such a perfume-like

sniff-a-palooza experience from a bottle of wine instead.

In awe,

Andrine

I had the almost the same experience with a bottle of

Gigotza (French)

and a Gamay Beaujolais. That is smelling flower

essnces the wine itself smelled like perfume. It

makes me wonder if anyone has tries to replicate the

ancient perfume method of making with wine annd

raisens. There would be color because it is red so

maybe a stain.

Fragrantly yours

Whee! I contacted the winery and am getting a case, because I mean,

why bother just getting a few bottles when I can save 20% with a

case? That's usually how I buy wine, anyway. They're at

http://www.mchenryvineyard.com/2002Estate.htm Andrine, I sent them

your post, and they want to use it. Contact if you want your

name used. She said she and her husband " learned new words " , which

made me laugh. Damn perfumery talk, lol.

Hi Andrine:

What was the meal you had with the PN? I expect the case to arrive

Dec. 26th and am trying to come up with a menu.

Hello Anya,

The meal was:

* Baked salmon layered with feta, spinach and pine nuts

* Brussels sprouts in a garlic butter sauce with turkey bacon

* Jasmine rice (at first we thought that was where the jasmine

grandiflorum was coming from, but on further investigation found it,

as reported, in the wine)

* Salad of mixed field greens with a shiitake sesame dressing

* A to-die-for flourless chocolate cake

The wine went beautifully with every part of the meal.

Cheers!
