Guest guest
I am grateful to this group for assuring me that I am not the only one who spills EOs. I knocked over a precious 1/4 oz bottle of Jasmine grandiflorum and got down on my hands and knees to soak up the spill in clean kitty litter (which is an amazing scent grabber and all I could snatch at the time). The resulting jasmine-scented kitty litter made the most wonderful sachets, that still perfume my drawers even two years later. I am also the person who on a recent airplane trip, dropped my bottle of civet tincture (which I bought as genuine but found out later to be synth) and broke it while in the security line. The stench was unbelievable, and my face was CRIMSON as other passengers around me turned to stare in wonder at the odor. A security agent who didn't know what happened came looking for the " dirty diaper " she thought had been abandoned in order to throw it away. Only fellow perfumers could understand my extreme embarassment as I explained that the broken bottle contained a perfume ingredient. I could tell people around me wondered what kind of " perfume " I claimed to be making. Arg!! If anything possibly could make matters worse I actually work for the federal department which runs airline security so I had an employee badge which made everyone involved think to themselves " Doesn't this woman KNOW BETTER? " Thanks for sharing my pain.

" Oh, I, and I am sure many others, share your pain. The only possible worse offender than the civet would have been garlic. ;O) I have only spilled a perfume once but it was enough for me to really exercise extreme caution, still accidents do happen. When I travel with my EO's I usually wrap each one with plumbers tape so that even if they fall they have less chance of breaking. If anyone want's or dares to open them the tape comes off easily with out residue. I have often wondered about traveling with my precious oils and usually just wrap and ship them in my luggage. Perhaps you could share some information regarding the guidelines of air travel with these products since you work for this goverment agency. I usually always keep a bottle of either peppermint or lavender in my purse, a small bottle .5 oz or less, is this ok? What about putting more in your suitecase? The idea of having cat litter around is a great idea. I have done this for years and thankfully never had occasion to use it. It is good to know that the idea works and that put to the test it came out smelling like... jasmine. Great idea for a sachet, what a save for you. Thanks for the chuckle in starting my day, ~Jo
Guest guest
Hi Jo, Sometimes our mistakes can lead us to good finds. Not to sound silly, but what kind of kitty litter was that? Was it the all natural clay based kind or one of the others? Still holding scent two years latter that would make it great material to use as sachets. Any kitty litter is designed to be absorbent but many have additives that would not be good for perfumery sachets. I keep a generic natural clay kitty litter around for spills, should one occur. Since I also do bath and beauty and other products I sometimes have materials that would require a quick clean up and the natural kitty litter works just great for this. As for the fragrance lasting for two years I can not say as this was not me, but for a heavy absolute like jasmine it would not surprise me. I would guess if you were soaking up a citrus it would not last longer than a few weeks at best. My neighbor had someone visiting a few weeks ago and parked in front of my house. The car was leaking some type of oil or greasy substance and it left a huge puddle out in front of my home. I poured some kitty litter on top of it and it soaked it up within minutes. After the most of it had been absorbed and swept up I put more down and then worked it in with a broom, even the stuff that had soaked into the asphalt started to come up and now you can hardly tell it happened. I felt good to know that I cleaned up the mess and hopefully saved a few of our neighborhood felines and birds in the process, not to mention the ecological effect of this getting into the ground water. Kitty litter is a must to have around for all kinds of emergencies... ~Jo
Guest guest
LOLOL that must have been quite the scene! I feel your pain! I've actually spilled my jasmine abs and dropped my rose abs which smashed all over the floor. I managed to suck most of my jasmine up with my pipette and get it back in the bottle. Luckily it was on a sterile work surface. Molly
