Probiotic cultures offer an exciting prophylactic and therapeutic

advance in the treatment of a diverse spectrum of gastrointestinal

disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory

bowel disease. Texas Tech University researchers define probiotics

as viable microorganisms that, when ingested, have a beneficial

effect in preventing and treating specific pathologic conditions.

They say that the best-studied are the lactic acid bacteria. But

other probiotics used in humans include a variety of organisms:

Escherichia coli, Streptococcus sp., Enterococcus sp. and various

fungi. The researchers note that some probiotics include more than

one strain of bacteria. Some of the mechanisms by which probiotics

enhance intestinal health include stimulation of immunity,

competition for limited nutrients and inhibition of epithelial and

mucosal adherence. Inhibition of epithelial invasion and production

of antimicrobial substances are other mechanisms that can be

involved.

Probiotics have also been shown to inhibit intestinal bacterial

enzymes that are involved in the synthesis of colonic carcinogens.

Delineation of their role in intestinal health requires that further

studies be undertaken, the researchers note.

Sorry but I'm going to have a hissy fit here. This is the most

absurd thing I have read in a long time. Doctors have known this for

years!!!! It used to be taught in medical school. When I was a

child, an Ear Nose and Throat doctor had all his nurses come in to

look at my throat, as I had had the worse reaction to antibiotics he

had ever seen. (I guess a sign of what was to come for me, I'm so

sensitive to medicines). An antibiotic had striped my throat of all

bacteria and when you have zero bacteria in your throat or mouth or

GI, there is no moisture, so my mouth and throat were bone dry and

had broken out in ulcerations. I couldn't swallow my own spit

without pain. He told me (or my parent's) to go home and drink

buttermilk until it healed up which was about ONE DAY!!!

Today Walgreens carries small bottles of lactobaccilus in the

refrigerators of their stores that anyone can buy without a Rx to

take with antibiotic treatment.

It's amazing how much medical schools are FORGETTING to teach

doctors, they are so busy teaching them how to prescribe their

prescription medicines instead. It's like all the knowledge of how

the body works and how to take care of it was scraped when

pharmaceutical companies took over running the medical schools. Now

doctors know nothing about normal body functioning and simple

preventive treatments.

I got sick (with what I have today) when I took a medicine that had

the side effect in me of suppressing my immune system. I told the

doctor and he said not to worry about the sore throat, saying " it's

just has to do with your white blood cells. " Honest to God, that is

what this idiot said to me... don't worry it just is screwing up

your immune system... you know that system your body has that

protects you from EVERYTHING from the common cold to cancer,

parkinson's disease, schleroderma, Hepatitis, Pneumonia, etc, etc.,

etc. I just can't fathom why there aren't more law suits than there

are. I went off the medicine of course and my sore throat went from

very painful to slightly painful and irritated but never got back to

normal since I had now chronic EBV, w assoc sore throat. So far I've

had it two years. I'm afraid next could be throat cancer as

constant infections and irritation set you up for cancer.

Below article would have you believe this is new discovery.

Apparently we have to RELEARN everything because medical schools are

so bad. I've heard pharmacy companies pay for the books for medical

schools and the books are are filled with large glossy pictures of

pills. Someone needs to do something to get pharmacy companies out

of medical schools, out of Congress, out of the FDA, and other

government agencies, and out of everywhere except for the pharmacy

business. They are killing people left and right.

I love your hissy fit. I am going through the " can't spit " thing now and have

been for some time.

I've got a few friends with kids going to med school soon -- maybe I shall

forward -- good words to live by.

Drug companies ----- while working in NJ for the FEDs -- who do you think

supplied the biggest booze supplies during X-mas times -- you got it -- the fine

folks in NJ making pills. Ya see, they were very happy when we got their execs

in and out fo the airport in a timely manner. BOOOOOZZZEEE FOR ALL!!!! Don't

let this out -- I'd hate to see my good friend in NJ stop getting their " drug/ I

mean booze " gifts.

Of course -- I never partook in the " gifting " -- haaaaaaaa. Ya gotta love

this country!!!
