We have had some whacky suggestions from our Trust - around phoning in after

last visit etc. but decided they were impractical. The only sensible thing

to do is to either take two of you or alert colleagues if one is concerned

about personal safety and ask them to wait for you to return. I have had

good support from the later and have needed it on occaisions. Ruth

Would that be before or after you have been bitten by the dog, tripped over the toys, fallen down the unlit stairs or attacked or fun over in the road on a bend? Ruth

Re: Lone working Procedures

Ruth, you are lucky that your PCT decided that phoning in after a last visit was impractical. We are supposed to do that, also not visit after 4pm. I have felt for some time that my PCT is getting so paranoid about safety to the extent that one can feel it is dangerous to do a home visit, full stop. I agree that we have to be cautious, but not go overboard. Thankfully attacks in the home are still rare and in my view is that I am just as likely to be mugged between 2-3pm or 11-12am as between 4-5pm. We have a policy that if it is felt a home visit would be dangerous we ask the parent to attend clinic instead, or if necessary visit in two's which I feel is sensible. We also have mandatory violence awareness days which is good, also mobile phones, but am not too sure about also being given personal alarms. One problem is mine is usually at the bottom of my bag along with other paraphernalia needed for visiting, so if I wanted it in a hurry would have to empty my bag first. What do other people think? June.
