Guest guest
Yesterday I was having a conversation with realtor in Reno and casually asked, " Have you run into any of this toxic mold stuff that people are talking about? " " NEVER " he said. " There is no toxic mold in Nevada. Some Californians are scared to death, but people around here don't even ask any more. That whole thing has died down and I think the crazies have given up. " Wow. Just before Easter weekend there was another news story on channel 8. and it's been on the front page of the Reno Gazette urinal a number of times. (OK, " journal " for those are sticklers about spelling) Heck, you can just google " Mold Reno " and see a bunch of local buildings that have had serious problems (like the DMV and Sheriff's offices, for example) Bottom line is, saying there is no toxic mold in Nevada is about like growing up in America and saying that nobody ever told you to brush and floss your teeth or never told you that smoking is hazardous to your health. A lot of people don't brush, and smoke like factories - they sure didn't listen, but to say they never heard about this is damn near impossible. This realtor didn't give me any " vibes " just as I am given to understand that Ted Bundy was a charming and believable fellow, for a mass murderer. I'm sure that most people would say " Don't worry about that realtor. It's no big deal. He's probably just forgotten. Don't make such a fuss, it's just a little white lie " . But you know what? This guy is " in the biz " , and since Stachybotrys has been talked up the way it has, he can't help but know about " this toxic mold stuff " , and when your life is destroyed and you are fighting devastating health problems after being financially ruined, and are forced to live in a tent - it is kind of a big deal. Is this realtor all that much different from Ted Bundy? -

I had told the homeowner before making an appt to see the place that I CANNOT live anywhere that has or ever has had any problem with mold, mildew, leaky roof, water intrusion of any kind, likewise with pesticides. The owner assured me that the house was " everything that you are looking for " and has never been pesticided, or had leaks or any mold. When I got to the place, I saw several screens had been removed. When I entered the place, I smelled strong cleaners - despite the huge air filters that were blasting away on " High " in every room. The switchplates had been removed for the rooms to be painted - and I could see black coming out of the holes. There was black mold up in the corners of the ceiling/walls in the bedrooms. I started heading for the door, and on the way saw a trapdoor to the attic with black mold growing around it, and beyond sliding glass doors, a wooden deck that was all rotted out. Once outside, I asked the guy whether there had been any roof or gutter leaks. He was annoyed now. " NO! I have allergies, too! " he said, and pulled out an inhaler. " There has never been any problems here with mold - I just took the screens out because I like AIR! And I put a new roof on a few years ago. " He then showed me a gutter drain pipe that went underground. " See? No drainage problems, rain goes underground. " As I left, I saw the other side of the house - the gutter pipes on that side had been taken out of the ground, and attached to drainage hoses that drained them several yards downhill away from the house. The ground on that side of the house was like a sodden sponge. Oh no, never had any mold problems. That guy had seemed like the most kind, honest, straightforward person and he was obviously lieing through his teeth. He was trying to remediate obvious negative drainage site problems and telling me NO PROBLEMS! Even though I'd told him that any more mold exposures would (further) devastate my health. Anything to get that rent coming in, I guess. All about the bucks and only the bucks. Last 2 houses I've looked at had visible black mold. I think most places for rent in lower price range here are unlivable and unsafe. But still for rent. Oh, yeah: one more thing. The house owner said his inlaws had just moved out. When I asked where they went, he said " Palm Desert. They wanted a drier climate. " Jo
