Guest guest
I completely one hundred percent agree about the second part how diet coke disprupts satiety. I have no proof, yet I am so sure of it. It makes me hungrier, so even though I love it I try to limit it, BUT, BUT , BUT--- the part about how an artificial sweetener elicits an insulin spike is news to me. If anyone has heard that news before, please say so, because I use plenty of artificial sweetner. But I really don't think that it hinders fat loss, just might make you more hungrier. -jojo (puzzled) > Diet Coke, regardless of how many calories it has, wreaks havoc on your fat loss efforts and will ultimately cause you to gain weight. There are two main reasons for the Diet Coke fallacy. First, the sweet taste from Diet Coke elicits an insulin spike, which blocks your ability to burn fat. Second, artificial sweeteners found in Diet Coke disrupt satiety, the feeling of being full.

Guest guest
Dont believe everything you read, especially with no scientific backup. Most reliable articles list its source, studies, and related materials at the end. This article is like an urban legend that wont go away and circulates around weightloss websites. The real deal is that diet sodas (and artificial sweetners) may be a tool to help people lose weight - and we know that excess weight is a REAL health problem for millions. And what they said about fruit? OMG! FIBER! is the key to fatloss and fruits have lots of it - dont drop fruits because of the natural sugars in them! Be conscience of how quickly they add up in calories(mmmm fruit salad and fatfree coolwhip!) just remember, balance/moderation in healthy food choices, not eliminating them. Back to the articles claims - in medical studies, 'sweet taste' by artificial sweetners does NOT ellicit an insulin spike - nor have they ANY effect on blood sugar or insulin at all - and do not hinder, in fact assist, in loss of bodyfat by substituting for the carbs/calories of sugar. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi? cmd=Retrieve & db=PubMed & list_uids=9062523 & dopt=Abstract (Hope that link works - gremlins usually wrap it around an advertisement and cut off long URLs.) With the average American now consuming over 142 POUNDS of sugar in a year, I think its safe to say its the SUGAR nad not the sugar substituters that are keeping us fat! Read up on how sugars are hidden in just about everything, how to sort them out,how your body uses them or stores them, and what the alternative sweetners are: http://www.geocities.com/jgrrl2/sugar.html <<joni>> *knowledge is empowering yourself to stop the insanity of dieting

Guest guest
I was a diet pepsi junky...but I am trying to wean myself off caffine *sniff* I am a major coffee lover. Anyway, I took to drinking diet rite, its made with splenda. Also shasta grapefruit soda has splenda as well...AND very good > I read this article from AtoZ Fitness Newsletter. Any thoughts from the group as to validity? Kind of bums me out to think I'm drinking fake soda for nothing. Hence, the goal is to consume as little sugar or sugar substitute as possible (including fruits and their juices). Why? The sweet flavor elicits the release of insulin from the pancreas to enhance the uptake of sugar by the cells so that it doesn't linger in the bloodstream. Once insulin is released it inhibits your fat burning hormone called HSL (hormone sensitive lipase). This hormone is responsible for releasing fat into the bloodstream to be utilized as fuel. If inhibited, your body is unable to burn fat and will then begin utilizing amino acids (from muscle) and carbohydrates as fuel. This will leave you feeling tired, grumpy, and sloth-like toward the end of the day. Not to mention, you will become abnormally hungry. Those with large amounts of HSL burn fat all day and look thin and slim. Those who inhibit it by eating or drinking the wrong substances grow fat throughout their adult years. > > Second, as discovered by Professor Terry son and associate professor Withers at Purdue University, artificial sweeteners disrupt satiety, the feeling of being full. Their results, published in International Journal of Obesity showed that " mouth feel " plays a crucial role in the body's ability to count calories and that when we consume artificial sweeteners we disrupt the body's ability to count calories based on sweetness. Not able to use mouth feel to count calories, those who drink diet coke will overeat without conscious awareness. In other words, you think you're not eating like a pig, but in reality you are. > > > > > > Diet Coke is not the only substance having these abilities. Makers of health food bars and protein supplements are either not aware or ignore the ill effects of sugar alternatives and sugar. This can be seen by the fact that most every health food bar and protein supplement is loaded with sugar or artificial sweeteners. The belief that these bars and supplements are healthy for you is a perfect example of how marketing strategies can supersede medical science and common sense. > > > In closing, Diet Coke is a joke. Stay away from it and other sugar sources if you're serious about losing fat and keeping it off forever. Regardless of your diet and/or training efforts, the aforementioned ill effects of sugar alternatives and sugar will greatly hinder them. > > >
Guest guest
I don't know if it's just me, but I don't find the caffeine-versions of sodas that different. I usually buy a case of diet pepsi and a case of caffeine free diet pepsi for the days I overdo it with my coffee...give it a try! Oh yeah, Diet Rite is good also, but I see that you know that ) Good luck! > > I read this article from AtoZ Fitness Newsletter. Any thoughts > from the group as to validity? Guest guest
Why does it only mention DIET COKE. What about saying all diet sodas? I gave up soda 100% when I started this challenge. I don't miss it one bit. I was not impressed by all the fructose in it. Yuck! I drink 1-2 glasses of crystal lite tea per day to get the caffine that is a natural fat burner. I use some splenda to sweeten it. > I read this article from AtoZ Fitness Newsletter. Any thoughts from the group as to validity? Kind of bums me out to think I'm drinking fake soda for nothing. Guest guest
I understand why this might cause folks to take notice. All I've ever heard about diet soda actually doing is triggering cravings in some BFLers. I haven't noticed any difficulty in my own ability to keep fat off but I really have no frame of reference because there was never a time I wasn't a diet soda drinker. Don't give the article too much credo. Keep a weekly calorie deficit. That will be the cornerstone of fat burning. Stasia
