Thanks for this website Jonie. What's always confusing is how much

skin to pinch. I have a lot of fat and if my sister is measuring my

triceps correctly it's predominantly fat and almost uses up all the

numbers. LOL

Here's a crash course in using calipers:

I'm too much of a control freak to trust an inexperienced helper with a 7-site

test. The margin for error goes up with that many pinch sites unless your tester

is extremely consistent.

It's possible to do your own 3-site test. In fact, if you take your readings 3

times in a row every morning for a week, you should become quite consistent.

Your numbers won't vary and you'll know for sure that you're always pinching the

same area and grabbing the same amount of skin. If a friend or relative does it

for you and their readings are all over the place you might be tempted to hurt

them. :-) Body fat readings are an emotionally loaded experience and you want to

keep innocent bystanders at a safe distance.

The only tricky reading to get yourself is the tricep. To get that one, look at

the back of your arm in a mirror. Find the center point between your arm pit and

elbow and dot it with a felt tip pen. Hold the marked arm straight out in front

of you at shoulder level (like enstein) and grab the mark with the

calipers. It takes some practice to be consistent but it's totally doable. For

all of your pinches, use an average of three readings. If there's more than a

couple millimeters difference in the three, then you know you need some more

practice.

Here's a good site that averages the 3-site numbers for you:
