Guest guest
Hi In our area we have developed a competency framework to assist with training and what the staff nurses and cnn can do, which I would be happy to send you if you wish. The CPHVA has also just launched their competency framework and best practice guidelines for cnns. Our staff nurses and cnn would carry out developmental checks on our core families over 1 year. They would also assist in clinics, a & e follow ups, parenting classes and home visits for follow up weights etc. The cnn have been a really great in the teams in the offering of packages of care for behaviour management, play etc. I would also like to know how trusts keep there CNNs updated in first aid as ours have requested training as they have stated they need 3 yearly updates to maintain their qualification. I can't see anything about this in the CPHVA guidelines and CACHE haven't been able to answer this query. I am happy to develop this training but wondered whether anyone else out there was doing this or buying it in? I also wondered if anyone was doing any work in intergrated community nursing teams across school nursing and health visiting, including cnn as well as staff nurses, as we are just strating to look at this more. Kind Regards Felicity Practice Development facilitator - North Surrey >>> lushrestaurant@... 11/02/06 4:50 pm >>> I am interested as to what tasks staff nurses and nursery nurses are being allowed to do in Health Visiting skill mix teams. Are your staff nurses allowed to undertake developmentals? Do they visit at 3 months to discuss weaning etc? What scope do they have? Are they and nursery nurses allowed to discuss issues like constipation? I am interested in all aspects of what your teams are doing. What pay scale are Health Visitors being paid if they manage a skill mix team? Judy Kara

Guest guest
From Lund-Lack We have employed Staff Nurses and Nursery Nurses on HV teams in Suffolk for some years. The Nursery Nurses are called Early Years Family Advisers (EYFAs -eefas!) which better reflects the diversity of training and backgrounds that they come from as some are not traditional nursery nurses but have a wealth of childcare experience and have completed the Early Childhood Studies degree programme. They chose their job title themselves. We use them to support all aspects of our work especially with basic childcare, behaviour problems and Special Needs. They do not run clinics by themselves but do undertake some developmental checks but never get involved with adult mental health issues or EPDS. Clearly we train them up and develop their skills. Parents love them. Staff Nurses get involved in a similar fashion but can also do lots of health promotion (eg smoking cessation, advising nurseries on Epipen use and so on and so on,the potential is endless. The HVs supervise, delegate and are enormously grateful for the contribution they make. Staff Nurses often go on to train as HVs, they have a real heads up when comes to doing the course. They work to our quality standards and we took advice from the NMC about accountability etc from the word go. Wouldn't be without them now.
