Guest guest
Tony Burfield posted this: If you look at the Federal Register / Vol. 71, No. 176 / Tuesday, September 12, 2006 / Proposed Rules p53617 you will see that OSHA have published, on Sept 12th 2006, an ANPRM (Advanced notice of Proposed Rule-Making) for the Global Harmonisation System of Labelling & Classification of chemicals (GSH). Adoption of the GSH by OSHA in 2008 will necessitate changes to OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). Basically anyone with hazardous chemicals in their workplace (essential oils will come under this category, as in the EU) needs to have a HCS - hazards communication program - with employees, clients/customers etc. - basically this is done through MSDS's, filled in under the 16 recognised categories, and the construction of appropriate labelling with hazard signs and symbols, risk & safety phrases etc.. Aromatherapists will already be doing this under due diligence when proposing interventions for clients. Perfumers working for international companies will probably also be working to the spirit of this principle already. However implementation of these proposals is going to require effort and compliance for many in the US. At Cropwatch we have been considering how we could release a Code of Practice for the Hazard Classification and Labelling for Transport of Flavour and Fragrance Substances and Preparations according to the EU-Regulations - EFFA have released a 2006 version to members, but this is (a) not in the public domain ( not necessarily totally comprehensive when considering the different requirements of the ingredients for natural perfumery and aromatherapy. This move in the US only increases the necessity for correct information in this category to be available more widely.
