Guest guest
most times I can detect mold with my nose, but not always, and some molds do not produce a strong smell. and sinus problems can hinder your smeller, so I just wanted to point out some things I learned from trying to find a mold free apartment. 1. dont rent a apartment thats located over a basement, or crawl space. 2. try to find one with its own heating and ac unit. 3. try to get one with its own entrance. 4. look for signs of leaks, like cealing tiles. 5. dont be afraid to ask questions. 6. explain that you have many sensativitys to many chemicals includeing mold. 7. ask questions like " did the previous renters have animals, how old is the carpet(try to find a place with no carpet at all. 8. if you impress on the landlord how you suffer from these things and he thinks theres something there that might bother you, he might be more honest, because he's not going to want to deal with you getting sick . 9. ask him about what he would be willing to do if you found you could not stay there after a short amount of time. 10. landlords do come across people with special needs(like allergy suffers) it is theri duty to imform you of possable problems. 11. if they wont let you try it out before hand, see if they will sign a statement releaseing you from contract if you have problems. this may take longer to find a place, but worth it to not suffer. anyone have something to add? the apartment I have now is a attic apartment, 3rd. floor, yes was a bit scary haveing got ill from roof leaks in my first home, but also, if there is a leak here, chances are good I well see it quick. its got its own entrance, and the heating and cooling unit is the type used in motels. its a pretty new apartment, was finished out about 3 years ago, but the new smell is long gone. I looked at a new one and boy did it make my ill. new carpet, glue used on countertops, exc. are bad. the floor is supposed to be 2 feet of insulation betwwen the apartment below me, this helps.
