One of the things that I was thinking for a business, was a small shop. But as I look around my area of North Carolina and Connecticutt I realize that I have never seen a natural perfumery. There was/is a perfume shop selling all the standard perfumes in Chapel Hill but most I believe are the commercial synth varieties. Is there a reason that the natural perfumes don't have as many platforms for retail? How many shops are there selling the natural perfumes? Rob My boutique sells both natural and combination fragrances. Dorothy
Guest guest
I used to work in a perfume shop that had natural oils for blending perfumes and custom scenting skin care and bath products. They custom blend perfume right in the store as you wait. http://www.escential.net/ Escential does carry many synthetics, but there is a selection of natural oils. Most of their natural oils come from Aura Cacia. Are you looking to start your own business??

Hi Rob: Maybe you aren't aware of the fact that natural perfumery as we know it is only a few years old -- five at the most, and the increased number of folks getting their products online has only blossomed in the last year or two. Stores will follow, soon. Barneys in NYC carries some, Bendels has Mandy's, there's JoAnne's store in La Jolla, a's Passion Flower Perfume in Seattle, Dorothy with some naturals in Pittsburgh. Don't know of any others. Anyone selling naturals has to be educated as to the aesthetics and qualities of naturals, since if they're schooled in selling synth perfumes, it's a completely different animal. It'll come, but it's not there yet. Guest guest
" Maybe you aren't aware of the fact that natural perfumery as we know it is only a few years old -- five at the most " Dear Anya and All, Please forgive my humble presumption to tell a bit more modern NP history for those that may not be familiar.... Mandy is the one who brought the most public attention to our art when she came out with her book 5 years ago. Perfumers, tradionally, did not tell their " trade secrets " , whether or not they worked with naturals. There other bonafied natural perfumers out there who have been legitimately working in this field for 20+ years. Degraff and Francois Michel are two of them which I have had personal experience with. I saw a lecture/demo by Mr. Michel in 1989 in PA, USA. He was a colorful speaker and had an interesting table top apparatus. He is still working and teaching. I visited him at his place in PA a couple of months ago and he made a lovely perfume for me. He will teach in our ACT conference in May 2007 in Phialdelphia. Ms. Degraff and I met in Turkey in 1997. She had studied NP at Rutgers University in the 60's with Stefen Arctander(just about the last time NP was taught at the college level in the US). I was so taken with her NP knowledge and willingness to share information, that I created teaching platforms for her in 1997 and 1998. Indeed, at least a couple of the people on this list studied with us in Natural Perfumery 1 and 2, in Scranton, PA. In '98 we were told we could not go back to the Monastary where the course was held, because we were too rowdy a group for the priests in training. Soon after that, our family became involved with Division 1A American football recruiting for our youngest son. He required 3 big surgeries (2 football related) within 2 years and my 5 day perfumery courses with got put on the back burner... I give Mandy enormous credit for bringing NP to the public eye in a big way. Anything that gets the information out there, so it can be carried on, is to be greatly commended. It's funny because this area, including Northern Kentucky used to be wide open..Within a few miles of me are an historic house once a famous brothel, and a resturant/brothel/roadhouse, still in business, just the restaurant though. I spoke with Mr. Michel a few years ago over the phone, and I believe he was a consultant to the industry, but did not produce perfumes. Rowdy perfumers, reminds me of Jeanne Rose's last class in SF, from what I've heard ;-) Can't forget Jeanne! It would be so interesting to have access to all of the teaching modules (my term) that all the NP teachers offer. I know Mandy has been training her Level 2 and 3 students to teach Level l. The big picture, at least for me, when I originally wrote " as we know it " encompasses the huge upswing in the people who now want to become natural perfumers. I have been tuned into the AT scene since the late 80's and never, ever found anything from any of the aforementioned folks that would have led me over to NP. I just stumbled into it in the early 90's when I declared myself a perfumer and used only natural ingredients. Slapdash as it was, I'm pretty sure many who were trying to create perfumes at that time were making sophisticated aromatherapy blends. Now, in the early 21st Century, NP is truly moving into its own. It would be great if folks like you, or Degraff or Michel would write on the process they came through in this field. It's part of our history, and it may be lost if not written down and shared. If you have contact with them, maybe you could encourage them, if it wouldn't be too forward? >I give Mandy enormous credit for bringing NP to the public eye in a >big way. " Hi Anya and All, Sure, I will call Mr. Michel and Ms. Degraff and invite them to join this group. I have no idea if they will be inclined to do so. It won't hurt to ask. Both are busy, but, do private consults. has her perfume called " Wine and Roses. " Once, many years ago when we were scouting out AT stores on Long Island and smelling various scented products, she gave this perfume to me on a smell strip, without me knowing it was hers, and asked for my opinion. I had been turning up my nose at synths, as they make my nose twinge, and my stomach churn. This perfume gently held my attention. The roundness and fresh, spicey rosiness of it caught me. I saw colors of pink, maroon and yellow when I smelled it. She just smiled and said " this one is mine " . It was then I decided to study NP in earnest. I wanted to learn how to combine the essences I had grown to love, into pleasing, harmonious, unified, scents. My serendipitous meeting with her in Turkey and the subsequent classes taught by her for me, were, I suppose, destined to happen. As a nurse, I had come into Aromatherapy through the therapeutic door in 1984-5, and couldn't blend worth a fig. I decided to tackle it like I did when I learned pharmacy or the central nervous system; systematically and progressively from less difficult to more so. Once I had my scientific foundation relatively down, I felt ready to step off into the creativity and magic of it all. Our two 5 day natural perfumery courses covered the basics of scent combining, lots and lots of hands on, nose on practice, record keeping and Q and A time with . Chrissie Wildwood, Dr. Wilde, my chemist husband, and others, were some of the additional teachers we had participate. A lot of work for me, and as I look back on it, definately worth it. My work these days straddles between science and spirit. Kind of like when I was a chemo nurse; making sure patients got the right meds at the right time depending on lab work, etc, as well as tending to their fears, concerns and spiritual needs. This is all I have time to write at the moment, will travel most of the rest of this month and will check in here from time to time.
