Guest guest
, The debate is always b/t Palm Pilot and Pocket PC based PDAs. If you have a Mac, I believe you can only get the Palm versions. I have a PC computer, so I had a choice. I made the choice to get an HP IPAQ, a Pocket PC based PDA. I like it a lot. I use it to sync to Office on my PC (Outlook - Mail, Calendar, Notes; Excel; etc.). I also use it as an iPod, putting playlists onto it that I can listen to as I take a walk; look at videos and photos or whatever. Plus lots of other stuff. I have it backed up on my desktop with Outlook and online on a site called Plaxo. One thing to know is that there is more software out there for Palm based PDAs. Pocket PC came on the scene later and is a Windows-based product, so there's less Freeware for it. But Epocrates and most of the major programs (Diagnosaurus, etc.) work for both. Ultimately, it's about which interface you like the best. Just make sure to splurge on the memory when you buy it... That's the worst when the memory runs low. Also, get a 1 gigabyte card to go with it and put all your documents, photos and music onto it. It'll keep it running faster. Hope that helps! I find mine very handy in clinic because all of my treatment notebook files are loaded onto it as word files and I have downloaded Epocrates (drug info) and Diagnosaurus (d/dx program). A few problems that have come up with the palm: 1 - the battery is welded into the case, so if it loses it's ability to charge the whole unit needs to be replaced. I got around this by getting an extended warranty at the store where I bought it. This guarantees that if the battery dies, they will replace the whole thing 2 - some people got error messages that caused their palms to crash - mine happened when I tried to go above a certain number of word documents, even though I had lots of memory left. The remedy was downloading and installing a more updated version of the " documents to go " software. With those problems solved I have been very happy with the palm pilot, but there can certainly be glitches along the way. (Make sure you synchronise with your home computer often, and charge it up regularly). It is quite useful for plugging in clinical pearls during class, conferences or preceptoring - a couple people have also bought little keyboards they can attach for faster data entry... If you want any more details, feel free to contact me directly. Karina Wickland ND06, BINM (4 months to go!)
