Hi

Such a good idea! Last time I went to conference we did this it was fun but

also a good motivater for me to participate and respons in discussions with

a 'face in mind'.

As a matter of interest which session are you refering to re workforce? I

am doing a research project working with two PCTs to profile their nursing

workforce and developing a HE response to help them meet their development

needs, so such a session would be very helpful.

CPHVA conference

I have been asked if many people are expecting to attend CPHVA

conference this year and, if so, if we should arrange to meet up

informally? It is often good to be able to put names and faces together.

I am speaking at conference in a panel discussion about the NMC3

register standards on Thursday afternoon (which unfortunately clashes

with a discussion about workforce that I would really like to be in, so

will not mind if others ignore me and go elsewhere: please feed back!)

I am only staying for the one day, as I have a major research meeting

on the Friday, but will stay over on Thursday night in order to catch up

with as many people/events as I can. Perhaps we could all plan to have

an evening meal together somewhere, or just a drink earlier in the

evening then on in smaller groups if we wish? It might be equally

useful for other Senate members to meet on the Friday, as that tends to

be the day most people attend, if at all.

What does everyone think?

I am unable to stay over night as have to be back home for the morning, so would favour an early evening drink on Thursday night if that suits others. It would be so good to put names to faces.

I would love to meet up with SENATE members either day but as your time

is limited could I suggest a drink in one of the bars in the early

evening of Thursday? People can get into smaller groups for later in the

evening?

Best wishes

Charlene, I don't have the programme in front of me, as I have it at

work, but I was thinking of the session with Ennals (Chief Exec. of

National Children's Bureau and Head of the Task Group on developing the

children's workforce) and Naomi Eisenstadt (head of National Sure Start)

who I believe are speaking at 2.30pm on Thursday afternoon.

I met Naomi in passing at a meeting yesterday, where she referred to the

challenge of plans to expand and develop the children's workforce, and

the requirement for everyone who works with children to have achieved

the core standards, developed by 'skills for health.' A challenge for

health visitors and school nurses, certainly, as the core standards for

working with children are not part of the NMC3 standards. I didn't have

an opportunity to follow this up in discussion at all, so hope some

people who know about the new training standards will be in that

session, so they can feed back about what is said, and feed back to the

speakers about the standards we are now working with. best wishes

Dear ,

I am down for a session last thing on the Friday - would love to see

Senators, but will miss you, on Thursday, alas.

Woody.

P.S. Cheryll has asked me to do a 'research surgery': Senate members with

research questions, do please try it out...

I first met Naomi about 20 years ago at some meeting regarding children when she was in a more lowly position than she is now. My abiding memory is of having a heated argument with her as she was absolutely scathing about health visitors although she appeared to know little about their role.

Hope her knowledge and opinion of HVs have improved over the years!

Have finally got around to looking at the programme for the CPHVA

conference and see I completely dreamt a workforce presentation

clashing with the panel discussion at 2.30pm on Thursday, although

Ennals is speaking about the children's NSF. Sorry about my

incompetence!

I look forward to meeting up with as many as can make it on Thursday

evening at around 5.45pm in the wine reception, ground floor entrance

to the exhibition. best wishes

I agree with you about Robyn martin's paper. For me Friday was highlighted

by the papers presented by 1 to 1 about Hv's impact on relationship

difficulties in the post natal period and Robyn Pound's presentation .. and

the glass of wine she and I had and a great chat afterwards!!

  • 1 year later...

Yes, let's meet at the wine reception in the conference hall on

Thursday (say, in the foyer of the conference centre? Unless anyone

has a more precise place to suggest in the conference centre), and

perhaps for those who wish to or are not around on Thursday in the

reception of the Marriott Hotel at about 7pm, which will allow an early

enough meal for anyone who wants to go on later to the party.

best wishes

Apologies that my confusing message about where to meet at the CPHVA

conference meant that we had a 'split group' meeting for dinner at two

different places on Thursday, instead of one place on Thursday and one

on Friday. I hope all who went enjoyed the conference; I arrived on

Thursday and had to leave before end-of-day on Friday, not really long

enough to get a feel for the whole thing.

I was encouraged, though, by Gail Cartmail's speech, which seemed very

measured and went through all the many things the union have been doing

on our behalf, including lots of activity challenging Commissioning a

Patient-led NHS and the spate of cuts around in primary care at the

moment. Any other high spots?

I liked your report on the D-SCOVER survey. It will be interesting to see how it

may influence Future Directions for Health Visiting.

After many working years of health visiting the change to an academic post

these past 5 years has given me lots to reflect on. The thing that came to mind

during your presentation was how little has changed in the hv role, but yet how

complex life is for clients, policy makers and service delivery. The answer I am

sure is an expanded workforce trained for these challenges and assisted by a

range of skilled support workers. More clarity of role, clearer expression of

outcomes, and intersectoral working is what I see as the way forward. I wonder

how much the desire by others to influence change in health visiting has really

made a difference?

I also enjoyed meeting aquaintances and finding that the shaken baby/protecting

heads work still fullfils a need.

I think Woody is memorable for his antics - piloting will never again seem so

dull! Was the hedgehog quote original and can I use it for a prevention plug?

Lots else of interest especially Mike on Implementing public health

research using a partnership approach. A more positive mood than last year I

thought?

I am sorry if I inadvertantly contributed to the muddle over where to meet but I

had dropped off the SENATE mail list and was not up to date in last minute plans

so just went with the flow.

Thanks for your kind words, . I would have liked a bit more

discussion, and thank you Ann, for your careful question which allowed

me to expand a bit more on the issues. I am actually quite excited by

some of the results of the survey, particularly the ability to have

'hard data' to show that working all the time with mothers and babies

does not mean this is a narrow way of working: that is only the base

from which to reach out to so many other vulnerable or needy groups in

the community. I am worried, though, about how limited the core

programme/universal service is in so many areas: just one (new birth)

visit as the norm in at least 40% of places.

It is always good to catch up with old friends and colleagues, as well.

I'm sorry I missed the SENATE get together but got talking and the time passed me by!

Highlights were Victor Adebowle whi I thought was inspirational and talking to lots of people. I was very disappointed by the first day and particular saddened at the lack of profesional leadership and direction with so many people struggling out there. But I agree, , Gail was heartening!

I hope all who went enjoyed the conference; I arrived on Thursday and had to leave before end-of-day on Friday, not really long enough to get a feel for the whole thing.I was encouraged, though, by Gail Cartmail's speech, which seemed very measured and went through all the many things the union have been doing on our behalf, including lots of activity challenging Commissioning a Patient-led NHS and the spate of cuts around in primary care at the moment. Any other high spots?

Another thing i enjoyed was presenting my research as a poster and getting enthused about it again! there was quite a lot of interest shown and some key concerns about supervision and competences and HV education in terms of working in a "therapeutic relationship".

Some one suggested that I should attach my poster to SENATE .. would people be interested and is that appropriate?

Re: Fw: CPHVA Conference

Thanks for your kind words, . I would have liked a bit more discussion, and thank you Ann, for your careful question which allowed me to expand a bit more on the issues. I am actually quite excited by some of the results of the survey, particularly the ability to have 'hard data' to show that working all the time with mothers and babies does not mean this is a narrow way of working: that is only the base from which to reach out to so many other vulnerable or needy groups in the community. I am worried, though, about how limited the core programme/universal service is in so many areas: just one (new birth) visit as the norm in at least 40% of places. It is always good to catch up with old friends and colleagues, as well. Coles wrote:

I liked your report on the D-SCOVER survey. It will be interesting to see how it may influence Future Directions for Health Visiting.

After many working years of health visiting the change to an academic post these past 5 years has given me lots to reflect on. The thing that came to mind during your presentation was how little has changed in the hv role, but yet how complex life is for clients, policy makers and service delivery. The answer I am sure is an expanded workforce trained for these challenges and assisted by a range of skilled support workers. More clarity of role, clearer expression of outcomes, and intersectoral working is what I see as the way forward. I wonder how much the desire by others to influence change in health visiting has really made a difference?

I also enjoyed meeting aquaintances and finding that the shaken baby/protecting heads work still fullfils a need.

I think Woody is memorable for his antics - piloting will never again seem so dull! Was the hedgehog quote original and can I use it for a prevention plug?

Lots else of interest especially Mike on Implementing public health research using a partnership approach. A more positive mood than last year I thought?

I am sorry if I inadvertantly contributed to the muddle over where to meet but I had dropped off the SENATE mail list and was not up to date in last minute plans so just went with the flow.

Ann, I would be very interested as I was not able to go to conference this year.

Best wishes,
