Janita, this should be fun. The Paperwhites especially made me want to

do this because their scent is one of those that (to my male nose) can

be both repulsive and wonderful at the same time. The component is

indole, isn't it? Common to some white flowers and to, yes, feces along

with a bunch of compounds with funny names like fecone and cadaverine,

(a halloween drag queen's name?). Sort of one of those supersonically

high top notes. But again, one of those essences that diluted

infinitessimally could make something interesting, I would think. This

is probably re-hashing archived material that has been chewed over a

million times so thanks for indulging me since I am so freaking excited

to finally be able to talk about this stuff with people who get it.

How about Doucement Nauséabond? Or Puanteur sans

Limites? Or just Poudre de la Pee-yoo?

Anyone else have some snide, garish names to add?

This could be fun... ; )

Andrine replies: Hahahaha!! Janita, Retch de Paradis gets my

vote! And I think and I will have to put Albert and Janita on

our " share " lists.

i have a little more time now, and will try to explain more

fully.

all of the sources of information talked about animal fat

as the best for enfleurage. but then again they didn't have

crisco then! anything else you'd just have to experiment with.

the fat has to readily absorb the oils, and also has to be

able to stand up to the alcohol washings.

so:

step one, prepare the " corps " ; the fat used. it should be purified

by melting slowly and filtered. then remelt and let it fall from

the sieve bit by bit into cold water. this removes any impurities,

and can be done three or four times to get the best " corps " .

sometimes a little alum solution was used to help get any smell out

of the fat. I did this once, but i can't remember how it helped.

i have to take better notes. then heat the corps to get out any

remaining moisture.

i used glass, and smeared the fat on it, then laid on the blossoms.

you change the flowers every day, and a whole lot of flowers are

necessary. usually this would go on the whole growing season, but

you can just judge what you've got and when you want to stop.

you end up with a " pommade " . you can melt it gently and then mix

with the alcohol and " wash " it. very slowly. you can judge for

yourself when to stop. (when enough of the fragrace has leached into

the alcohol. If you freeze it the fat should solidify and then you

can filter it out. This resulting liquid was called an " extrait "

or " esprit " in France, and an " essence " in England.

This is what I would end up with.

In production these esprits would have the alcohol removed by

vacuum to get the " absolute " , but of course i never had enough

to do this, but it was fun anyway.

a lot of the old recipes refer to these esprits.

I have noticed this too. I keep my citrus oils in the

fridge and they lose about half their odor intensity

until they have been brought back to room temperature.

It was just the same when I found the site and Anya invited me in....... it

was coming out of a long dark tunnel where there was only me holding a candle

then all of a sudden there was a whole friggin' concert of people holding

candles and shedding light (well you get my drift)........

You are lucky you can start playing straight away.....I have to wait till

spring...... altho I am not holding up to much hope with the bluebells giving up

their scent very easily if at all as from what I have read so far it can't be

done. But it still will be fun to try. I am certainly not short of a few

bluebells. But I am wondering if a tincture might be the way.... what do you

think? what does anyone else think? Could do with some input.....

the emails have been piling up ....... couldn't get on last night..... it is

5.18am here in Wales and I am wide awake after letting our cat, tinkerbelle

out......
