Guest guest
Hi Deanna, Try UNDA 8,24,25 for the hot flashes and possibly Aconite, low potency daily. Try treating the circulatory aspect of the HFs. I've seen moderate to significant improvement when women are on Tamoxifen but for some it's really tough to get the HFs to subside completely. You should alos find out if she's eating chicken or sugar. I've seen both these things increase HFs with a number of women. Look for all the triggers, stress, etc. Good Luck, Ginger Nash --- drdeanna <drdeanna@...> wrote: > Hi > I am seeing a 58 year old woman who had Breast > Cancer 2 years ago. > She is currently taking Tamoxifen and having a lot > of hot flashes. > She has been seeing an acupuncturist and Chinese > Herbalist for years > and the hot flashes continue to be just as bad. Guest guest
Hi Deanna i would address the liver as well..unda 1, 20, 258 (for catabolism of the drug she is on : Tamoxifen)...i have had success with resolving hot flashes with treating the TCM picture and unda numbers - usually it is the liver is effected (especially if there is a lot of ANGER issues). you have to change up the diet too - you know the basic good diet of low saturated fats, lots and LOTS of green vegetables (get her on a Greens+ supplement if she is not eating her greens), fruits, whole grains, wild fish, and NO animal fats. you have to basically alkalinize the diet and include phytoestrogens. the heel remedies work well too - try Equifem-Mood for the relief of hot flashes and will buy you some time until you find the cause. also try Klimakt-Heel! of course always try a constitutional remedy more specific to the patient maybe consider Sepia or Lachesis - both remedies have a big affinity for hot flashes during menopause (just a thought). i would do a 30CH once and not re-dose until the patient has had some time to respond...you can then work your way up the scale to e.g. 200CH (if of course there is a little or no response with 30CH) good luck Lamise From the Desk of, Dr. Lamise Elkhalil BSc, ND Vancouver, BC >From: " drdeanna " <drdeanna@...> >Reply- > >Subject: Tamoxifen and hot flashes - Q >Date: Fri, 06 Oct 2006 14:52:38 -0000 > >Hi >I am seeing a 58 year old woman who had Breast Cancer 2 years ago. >She is currently taking Tamoxifen and having a lot of hot flashes. >She has been seeing an acupuncturist and Chinese Herbalist for years >and the hot flashes continue to be just as bad. Guest guest
Black Cohosh is a great herb to use, specifically for women having hotflashes while on Tamoxifen. Even Dr. Love recommends it in her book, along with flax seeds! There has been conflicting evidence about this in the past, mostly because it was not well understood how the herb acts in the body - is it estrogenic or not? Here is what I understand about it from my work with Dr. Hywood: - Most of the research on Black Cohosh and breast cancer cells was done was in vitro. This is problematic for many reasons, one of which being that what we understand to be the active constituents need to be metabolized into such by gut bacteria. Nevertheless, of the 12 in-vitro studies, only 1 showed a marginal stimulation of breast cancer cells. The other 11 showed inhibition of breast cancer cells and enhancement of Tamoxifens anti-proliferation effects (among other things); -The few in-vivo studies on rats show it to stimulate osteoclastic activity but not uterine or breast cell proliferation; - Clinical trials (1 at the Mayo Clinic) in humans show Black Cohosh co-administration with Tamoxifen showed 56% reduction in hot flash scores (decreased number and severity) along with improving sleep and fatigue. I do not have a recommendationon dosing, but if you look at the literature sources, I am sure you can find what dosage they used. ( Munoz G, Pluchino S. Maturitas 2003;44 Suppl 1:559-65 and Pockaj FA, Loprinzi et al. Cancer Invest 2004;22(4):515-21) Outside of also treating the liver, I wonder if it is worth it to also treat the adrenals. We know that healthy adrenal function prior to menopause helps with a smooth transition through menopause. Now that she is experiencing symptoms, perhaps a good adrenal protocol could help mitigate what she experiences. Hope this helps, Korza ND5, NCNM >From: " Lamise Elkhalil " <lamisee@...> >Reply- > >Subject: RE: Tamoxifen and hot flashes - A >Date: Mon, 09 Oct 2006 15:21:56 -0700 > >Hi Deanna >i would address the liver as well..unda 1, 20, 258 (for catabolism of the >drug she is on : Tamoxifen)...i have had success with resolving hot flashes >with treating the TCM picture and unda numbers - usually it is the liver is >effected (especially if there is a lot of ANGER issues). you have to >change >up the diet too - you know the basic good diet of low saturated fats, lots >and LOTS of green vegetables (get her on a Greens+ supplement if she is not >eating her greens), fruits, whole grains, wild fish, and NO animal fats. >you have to basically alkalinize the diet and include phytoestrogens. > >the heel remedies work well too - try Equifem-Mood for the relief of hot >flashes and will buy you some time until you find the cause. also try >Klimakt-Heel! > >of course always try a constitutional remedy more specific to the patient > >maybe consider Sepia or Lachesis - both remedies have a big affinity for >hot >flashes during menopause (just a thought). i would do a 30CH once and not >re-dose until the patient has had some time to respond...you can then work >your way up the scale to e.g. 200CH (if of course there is a little or no >response with 30CH) >good luck > >Lamise > > > > >From the Desk of, >Dr. Lamise Elkhalil BSc, ND >Vancouver, BC > > > > >From: " drdeanna " <drdeanna@...> > >Reply- > > > >Subject: Tamoxifen and hot flashes - Q > >Date: Fri, 06 Oct 2006 14:52:38 -0000 > > > >Hi > >I am seeing a 58 year old woman who had Breast Cancer 2 years ago. > >She is currently taking Tamoxifen and having a lot of hot flashes. > >She has been seeing an acupuncturist and Chinese Herbalist for years > >and the hot flashes continue to be just as bad. Guest guest
For Hot Flashes, and breast cancer prevention/hx, I have seen the following help as well:Ayurvedic herb Asparagus racemosa and Pitta (heat) soothing diet. So, cooling foods like Lime, Pear, perhaps coconut and maily avoid hot foods and spicy foods including nightshades, particularly raw tomatoes, carrots, garlic and onion. Then, I too have used and would recommend adding to your UNDA numbers and homeopathics, supplements already mentioned to treat the liver such as Calcium-D Glucerate, Indolplex/DIM and Glutathione, all available from ITI or Tyler. Of course BTG and particularly those COPs, lymph massage and brushing, daily! ) Blessings,Brad Dr Bradley West (ND)PO Box 1434Felton, CA 95018 "Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature.
