The Chrissie Wildwood book. Aromatherapy Perfumes, has

a few Mock Carnation Concentrates. Most of which do

call for Ylang and Black Pepper, with an infused

vanilla oil as a base. Also Ylang, Rose Abs. and Black

Pepper..

Dear Patty and ,

Thank you so much for the advice! I had great experience with

from White Lotus (although I ordered from him inderiectly

as part of a co-op buy), so I am going to get my carnation from him.

And thanks to Zz and JoAnne for the tips of duping carnation. I

was not so happy with my result of ylang ylang, pepper and cloves (and

a few other things to support the carnation theme, mosty based on

formulas from Poucher's book). But I will have to let my carnation

mature for a while and see what needs to be added. More indole or more

eugenol... I have a feeling there is no way around it in a perfume but

to use some of the real carnation absolute. There may be no shortcuts

in this case... I will let you know how this progresses.

Is it just my imagination, or is there some deep musky sweetness to

carnation, besides the eugenol? And a hint of powder and green? I am

trying to stay away from civet in my perfumes (unless I knew the civet

it came from wasn't tortured! What I have is a sample from et

from a few years back), but I must admit this is getting really

tempting here...

I wrote recently about how disappointed I am in many aromatics from Egypt.

Many of them have an Allium family off note for some reason. Sloppy

harvesting practices, getting some onion or garlic mixed in? I'm not just

talking about carnation here, also orange flower absolute and others.

If 's is free of that note, I'm interested!

's carnation absolute is cheaper - 7 ml for $65, and most

professionals purchase from him, AFAIK. That's a heck of a lot more absoute

for the price. I've had some bad experiences with Natures Gift in the past,

and the prices are way too high, IMO. Every supplier should have fabulous

quality stuff, and also have competitive prices.

Hi Ayala:

I've always found that turmeric, diluted way down, has a beautiful powdery

note to it. Carnation flowers do have a very green note, more of a lift

note, maybe, believe it or not, a very, very dilute spearmint might do the

trick?

Are you speaking of the powdery aspect of civet? Try the turmeric first, or

dilute down the et you have to less than one percent, and parse it

out over the years so that you have the tiny, tiny bit you need, and when

it's gone, it's gone. Perhaps by then you'll have sourced non-cruelty

civet, if such a thing exists.

Hmmm...well, for me it has been so-far so good with Nature's gift....Everything

I have received from them has been great and i always get it fast...but Thank

you for the info on the other source (with better prices). I will check that

My carnation is from Fakhry in Egypt, and I'm fairly sure that's where

gets his

from ( is, unusually, quite happy to tell you where he obtains his

supplies).

I cannot see any sulfur notes in the absoute. I would say it has a low-impact

(reminiscent

of materials that contain non-odorous paraffins) delicate but persistent

fatty-floral odor

with a spicy backnote. After a few minutes it does begin to smell like fresh

carnations

(eugenol coming through?) and my best guess is that it is genuine. I have never

used it in

a composition, but with all this discussion...
