Guest guest
Hey Dan, I have what I like as a method for this, and my patients seem to have a higher level of compliance since I started suggesting it. I have them get two 32-quart plastic containers at Fred Meyer’s. They’re the flat rectangular ones for storing clothes in under your bed; I’d say their dimensions are something like 6”X16”X24”..anyway, 2 of them just fit in the bottom of a standard bathtub. So I have them put ~2inches of cold water in the first one, and then slide it back to the rear of the tub (away from the faucet)..then I have them put the other one in and put 2 inches or so of hot water in that. It’s right under the faucet then, so when they need to refreshen the temperature they just have to reach up and turn the water on over it. You don’t need a lot of water b/c once your butt is in the container it displaces water all around iti, yet it is still quiite effective temperature. When you’re done the tubs are easy to lift to empty, and there’s no mess b/c everything’s in the tub..I have them just leave the containers in the tub to dry for the next time. This seems to work for my folks...one thing though—and you know my setup here--is that I physically take them into my bathroom here and show them how to do it—I even get some of them to do it on a “dry run” to work out the kinks for themselves..some people discover they need one of those tub handle devices that you can attach to your tub for gripping onto so you don’t fall, and I think the fact that they see I have it all set up and that I do it myself helps...anyway, hope this helps you...all the best...Bob...Kellum, ND, PhD, LAC, LMT On 2/24/06 2:20 PM, " " <drdanielnd@...> wrote: There are so many times I want to give folks sitz baths but have not yet found a satisfactory method of doing them at home that patients are willing to follow. I usually have folks just sit in the bath and then hose down the pelvis in the shower. But most folks dont have a shower hose, and using this method the cold water makes the hot water tepid. Guest guest
Hello, I do a variation of what Bob suggested. The method would vary based on their bath size and their agility. I use one tub on the bathroom floor for the cold phase and use the bathtub for hot. I tell them to go fred;s and sit in the tubs to find the right size, or buy them and try at home. Again, you only need a little water. I have them put ice cubes in the cold (assuming they can handle the intense temp difference). And they can easily keep adding hot water. I find patients are compliant with this method for acutes. If it is chronic ie BPH I just have them hose themselves in the shower. --- <drdanielnd@...> wrote: > There are so many times I want to give folks sitz > baths but have not yet found a satisfactory method > of doing them at home that patients are willing to > follow. Guest guest
Hi group What about standing in the shower and letting hot water run down the back and then for cold keep a wash cloth in basin of cold (ice optional) on the side. apply the cold as you would a cold ice pack. This might work for folks who just can't get up and down well enough to use the tubs. You may lose the benefit of any herbal infusion in the water if you did a stand up method, though. - ND5 From: Kellum <@...>Reply- To: UNDA Group < >Subject: Re: Sitz Bath methodologyDate: Fri, 24 Feb 2006 14:42:19 -0800 Hey Dan, I have what I like as a method for this, and my patients seem to have a higher level of compliance since I started suggesting it. Guest guest
There are plastic sitz baths that can be bought at some pharmacies or through Cascade Health (http://www.1cascade.com/). They sit on the toilet so there is no need to squat. I fill mine with the herbal mixture (warm) and then have an additional tub on the bathroom floor filled with ice water.
