I used to swim competitively and yes...they lift weights. We used

to work out like crazy people on top of swimming miles and miles.

It takes a little while...but yes, you'll have great shoulders.

Mine have come back pretty decent because of the swimming I used to

do. And my legs have come back because of the gymnastics and soccer

I used to do. Muscles have memories. :) If you start swimming hard

core...you'll have great shoulder. Also very broad shoulders.

Butterfly was one of my best strokes...you HAVE to have powerful

shoulders for that one. Swimming is extremely hard, if you do it

correctly...and one of the best exercises out there. But we'd feel

it if we didn't lift on top of all the miles...and it only helped us

get faster.

They do have awesome shoulders, but as many longtime swimmers will

tell you, it's so easy to mess up your shoulders. My DH swam and

played water polo growing up and now his shoulders are a mess. And

if you listen to some of the Olympians stories, many of them have had

to have shoulder surgery in order to get back into the sport.

I swam competitively as of last year (freestyle and fly were my strokes),

but had to stop due to a terrible rotator cuff injury that would never heal

completely. Even to this day, if i get in the water, the resistance alone is

enough for it to act up again.

Granted, it hasn't bothered me much during my weight training. (knock on

wood)

Its a completely different form of training and will build your shoulders

up, that's a given.

But try finding a tshirt that doesn't stretch across the shoulders! Thats my

problem now :)

Thanks Diane. The gym I go to has this awesome 25 meter indoor lap

pool so this might definitely be a winter activity for me. I crave

swimmers' shoulders and haven't seemed to be able to achieve this by

lifting alone. I appreciate the info.

Yes, but these are people who spend hours a day in the pool. I think

swimming as a cardio exercise for BFL is an excellent choice. Not only does

it work every muscle in your body, but there's no impact. It's also

extremely therapeutic both physically and mentally. I don't think that

non-competitive swimming will cause the damage to your shoulders that

Olympic swimmers face.

Stasia,

I can tell you from personal experience that swimming will help with

shoulders and back. Even today, people still tell me I have a

swimmer's back/shoulders :) It also doesn't take very long for them to

develop.

funny you should say that, A friend of mine was a swimming -olympic hopeful in

college (10 years ago) but had to quit because of her shoulder injury. Now she's

better, and can swim for fun, but no tennis for her. Basically her shoulder is

screwed.

But I think at our level we'd be okay, we're not talking 3 hour plus sessions in

the

pool......
