Dear Nina

I am Chair of the Special Interest Group on Health, Homelessness and Housing in the CPHVA. Perhaps you could ring me on 07786330417. There are job descriptions but it is important that you et the emphasis right for your particular area and community of homeless people. I am not sue that it is good to combine working with Travellers and Homeless people -the needs are extremely diverse. It is also important that the post has a clear developmental and strategic role within the PCT. The PCT will also need to be clear about which group of people within the homeless population you are working with -it must not become a substitute for what other Nurses could do -this is a major public health issue in the UK and requires a public health approach -which is multi-agency, user-led and tackles a range of issues including housing but also offering intensive support for users. The post must have clear links with the Homelessness Strategy and ideally you will have already agreed this post withat particular group .Yes, it is also about improving access to health services but I believe that when people are settled they will access their own health needs. Working with homeless people is a tremendous example of the true nature of Health Visiting and is as far away from the nursing/medical -even dare I say it -present HVing model as can be. But, supervision must also be written in and agreed from the beginning -it must be more than the 'normal' clinical supervision provided -as this is complex and potentially a recipe for burn-out.But, I am very happy to have a chat with you and give you info or even visit you. We also have a Conference planned in Manchester on Nov 10th.

With very best wishes

Sue Walters

job descriptions

Dear collegues,

Through the public health forum our PCT has recently agreed to fund a HV post to support Travellers and the homeless .Has anyone access to any job descriptions of such a post or any pointers around subject?

On a positive note I feel its been an uphill struggle to get recognition for Health visiting and school nursing but our PCT is certainly now trying to support us particularly in the light of the public health agenda and the 'green paper' ,we just need the resources!

Thanks

Nina Heaps
