Guest guest
This was my first try at drainage. This is a 53 year old woman who came in with a chief complaint of long term (9 years) hyperthyroidism and goiter. She had been seeing a chiropractor who had most symptoms under control, except for tremors and diarrhea, for which she took Imodium daily. She has also been anorexic for 30 years. We have been working on eating more. I started her on UNDA #s 16, 273 and 1000 (now I wouldn't have started with this), thyroidinum 9CH and Ribus Nigrum. While on this, she was feeling good, her hair and skin felt better to her, blood pressure normalized (generally hypotention) and her goiter started to get smaller (this is the first time is started to get smaller). Two days after she stopped the remedies, she developed all the symptoms she had 9 years ago when her hyperthyroid started: severe SOB, diarrhea, severe edema, tremors, loss of apetite, weakness in legs, hair loss and insomnia. I put her back on the same remedies (16, 273 and 1000) and her edema seemed to be getting better, but she calls me 4 days later and it is moving into her lungs. I tell her to take 2 drops of each remedy, but this is not helping and she went through a 2 ounce bottle of diuretic tincture in 2 days. I am worried about CHF so I stop the UNDAs and I put her on Lasix for 7 days and her edema resolves. Then at the advice of another practitioner, I start the following protocol with her: Chelidoniumplex: 3-5 drops tid UNDA 16, 273, 1000: start with 2 drops tid and increase slowly to 5 drops tid over the course of 12 days. UNDA 2: 5 drops tid calc carb 30C one dose She was doing well a month later, so we continued. After 6 weeks, she stopped the remedies for some reason ( I am not sure why) and was OK for 2 weeks. We then started UNDA 2, 273, 1000, 16 again and this time the severe edema was coming back even on the remedies. I did not wean her back up, but began with 5 drops tid and maybe that was my mistake? Anyway, she took Lasix for the 3rd time and the symptoms resolved. She has been off the remedies for 2 weeks now and I am trying to decide what to do next. She is pretty stable. Her edema is gone, but she is having a lot of hair loss due to stress. Her hands have less tremors than when she first came in and her stools are more solid. After the first bout of edema I had her go in for lab tests and there were many abnormals: Low: WBC, RB,HGB,HCT,MCV,MCH, creatinine, albumin, total cholesterol (58), HDL, DHEA (19), TSH (0.01) High: ALK phos, total bilirubin, chloride, free T4 (4.5) So, I would really like to do more drainage, but worry about the edema. I would appreciate any help I can get. This is a really nice woman. She does not want to take the drugs to suppress her thyroid, but I am not sure if I can really stabilize her without them. Thank you for your help. This has been a very intensive situation. Deanna Hope Berman, ND, CM Ithaca, NY
Guest guest
Hi Deanne, What a great first experience with drainage…welcome aboard! It looks to me like you have a lot of systems that you will be working in. The GI, the CVS, the CNS, the endocrine for starters. Problem is we can’t do them all at once (even though we may want to some times). I think you’ve done a great job, and I hear you when you say she’s a “nice woman” so you want to do good by her, but nice woman or old bag, she’ll still need to work through her process. I would remind her that it is a process, you may want to point out that there are a number of organ systems involved…and does she understand that. I often find that because pts don’t consider the bigger picture the same way we do, they sometimes get impatient – but once you spend the time drawing the big picture for them they understand, relax and are even more compliant. Help her to understand that you cannot expedite the return of her good health, but you can facilitate it. Then, I would start with some very basics – you didn’t mention whether you were doing BTG, definitely that (especially COP) and some global drainage. The up and down with the edema and return of old symptoms sounds like an aggravation probably because her emunctories are not open – open those emunctories – during this time you may want to mix her a supportive tincture (you mentioned tincture so I am assuming you have a botanical pharmacy as well) or not. Let the global drainage do it’s thing and then see where she’s at. The Chelidonium plex was a great addition for the edema. Once again if you have a botanical pharmacy you may want to use a tincture for support if the edema becomes an issue during the global drainage (galium, taraxacum, crataegus etc…just ideas). In my experience global drainage does remarkable things. How is the “working on eating more” going with an anorexic? Well, I’m way too comfortable in front of my fireplace here. So for fear of getting carried away, I offer these ideas and wish you well. Guest guest
Is her total cholesterol really 58? If so, I would be looking into that and considering her adrenals a part of the problem as well. In addition to the mentioned botanicals, I think lycopus is a great one for hyperthyroid.
