Guest guest
Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that he's ill. I hope you can find something that works. Perhaps mixing some protein powder in with the ensure? I'm not certain. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Guest guest
Have you looked at the ingredients for Ensure? Not the greatest stuff: U-D Water, Corn Syrup, Sugar (sucrose), Maltodextrin (corn), Calcium Caseinate, High Oleic Safflower Oil, Canola Oil, Soy Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Corn Oil, Natural & Artificial Flavor ... Still, it sounds like candy bars would be good for him at this point, so I can understand that ingredients may not be at the top of your priority list. Here are two of my absolutely most favorite meals. Don't know if your dad will like them, but I love them. ================================ Banana Peach Protein Smoothie -------------------------------- 1/2 C. frozen peach slices (37 cal, 9g carbs) 1/2 banana (50 cal, 13g carbs) 1 serving vanilla protein powder (110 cal, 25g protein) 4 packets of Splenda Glycemic Rating 47.84 197 cal, 25g protein, 22g carbs My bag of frozen peaches says about 1/2 C. is about 37 calories. Put the peach slices in the bottom of the blender. Then, put the banana and vanilla protein powder (I use Grow by Biotest) and Splenda on top of them. Add just enough water to get it to blend. Blend until it's nice and smooth. Then, add as much more water as you want. I prefer a fairly thick smoothie consistency, not a real runny drink. I also recommend freezing this for 30 minutes or more, then taking it out of the freezer about 30 minutes before you're going to eat it. ================================ Banana Berry Protein Smoothie -------------------------------- 1/4 C. mixed dark berries, frozen (20 cal, 5g carbs) 3 strawberries, frozen (33 cal, 8g carbs) 1/2 banana (50 cal, 13g carbs) 1 serving vanilla protein powder (110 cal, 25g protein) 4 packets of Splenda Glycemic Rating 49.16 214 cal, 25g protein, 26g carbs Put the frozen fruit in the bottom of the blender. This one's great right from the blender, or you can stick it in the freezer for 30 minutes or more, then take it out about 30 minutes before you're going to eat it. I usually have frozen fruit smoothies like these 3-5x/week. I often make them in the morning, stick them in the freezer while I'm getting ready for work, take them to work (remember to grab them out of the freezer before you leave the house!), stick them in the freezer at my office and then take them out of the freezer about 30 minutes before I'm ready to eat them. > This is somewhat ot but maybe some of you can help with all the > nutrition knowledge here. Guest guest
When my father was being treated for cancer, he had a feeding tube that he was fed through for a year and it was Ensure that kept him going. He did really well on it and once the tube was out, he drank them because he couldn't do too many solid foods. More recently, when my grandpa fell ill, we gave him Balance shakes and those have supplemented his regular meals quite nicely as well. Good luck! Guest guest
Oh Colleen! I am hoping this message finds you and your family doing better! I know this time of year with the heat older folks get dehydrated SO quickly, so hopefully it's something not too serious. Please take care! Guest guest
> Oh Colleen! I am hoping this message finds you and your family doing > better! Thanks Ruth. It was an ordeal but we had him admitted to the hospital. Unfortuantely it is most likely much more than deydration. Odds are stomach or lung cancer but right now we are awaiting a formal diagnosis. This is just a preliminary thought as to what the physical signs show. Thanks for your email. Colleen
