I have just come across this web site which may be of use

http://www.nursingleadership.co.uk/

A health visitor in this Trust undertook the RCN programme and spoke very

highly of it although she did feel it was focussed on acute hospital nurses.

Nevertheless she was able to adapt it for her needs.

Of particular interest was the " Patient Story " technique which we may be

going to incorporate into our clinical audit programme for gaining a

qualitative user perspective re our health visiting services.

Welcome Caroline, In Bath we are changing our practice by adding a further

two dimensions. In addition to the individual care we are incorporating a

'family public health' dimension and by using 'learning sets' are embarking

on a community public health movement. In my own area we are now working in

a multi-agency whole systems way supporting community led initiatives. Its

both exciting and tiring and a bit too early to evaluate. Ruth

I am trying to look at the use of learning sets as an aid to learning and

reflection - would it be possible to share more of your work?

Dear Ruth,

Brilliant.

Fiona and I would love to implant the thought that you might like to write

about this for the new

CAMH in primary care journal..which is about health and not just CAMHS.

Chris.

Hi Chris

You can find out about patient story technique from the RCN -

Clinical leadership Development Programme 2001

Also 2 articles may be of interest:

Sit up, take notice, Health Service Journal 11th May 2000;

Take five, Health Service Journal, 7th Feb 2002

My information is from a colleague who undertook the course, I

haven't done it myself but she has used the technique successfully in

the community.

Happy to share info - PH Action Learning Sets are being undertaken by a

group of HVs (reps from each geographic area) plus Dir of PH. Please find

attached a copy of the presentation I gave colleagues and perusuaded a group

to help us with this work. We have enlisted the help of a PH registrar to

assist with a statistical picture of each ward + gross area stats. We have

also enlisted the help of Local Authority personnel from Community

Development, Environmental Health, Leisure, Transport, Housing and Economic

Regeneration + Voluntary agencies. Using this method we hope to arrive at a

consensus of need for a given population in a small area. We will then test

this with the population directly. This way of working is in line with my

research and uses a 'whole systems' approach to need and service provision.

Rather obviously if one has (as we have in one area) a large number of

elderly solo gentlemen and the local church is doing a grand job in

providing a lunch club then there is no purpose in reinventing the wheel -

however the provision of 'Link' transport scheme and persuading the local

theatres to offer free seats to matine performances may be just the job.

Hope that this is helpful. Do come back if you would like more info. Ruth

This is wonderful.

PriMHE is about to publish its new Resource Pack for Primary Care which will

cover effectively standards one and two of the NSF for mental health. I

would love

to put in there links/details of what you are doing/how other could do it

at PCT level. We are hoping to produce a CDROM to go with it...so anything

you feel you could

share/wish to disseminate to the UK at large... would be brilliant.

Plan is to launch at the NIMHE Conf in June. All credit and due

acknowledgement will be given.
