Guest guest
Would you know if Benzoin falls under Styrax of the IFRA code and standards? Are they the same? thanks! :josephine Hi phine, The IFRA (International Fragrance Research Organization) website lists its guidelines at http://www.ifraorg.org/GuideLines.asp. I found no restrictions for Benzoin Siam or Benzoin Sumatra. Their entry for Styrax specifies the two Styrax species that are restricted, neither of which are the same as either Benzoin. IFRA does not list Benzoin in Appendix 1, either, where naturals that contribute restricted molecules are listed. A brief survey of Material Safety Data Sheets indicates that Benzoin usually has a warning about possible skin sensitization. It might be worth noting that Material Safety Data Sheets, in general, list possible skin sensitization or irritation for a very large percentage of materials...perhaps with the idea of erring on the safe side. I believe that natural perfumers should be familiar with the IFRA guidelines and that we should voluntarily adopt them in our own blends. The IFRA guidelines are easy to read and understand and, for the most part, are easy to follow. They restrict some materials that few of us would ever use, such as Tree Moss absolute. However, they also restrict some of our most commonly used materials, especially citrus oils. Even so, fine perfumes and colognes can be produced within the IFRA guidelines.
