have a 51 y/o woman with RA whom i've been tx for 3 yrs. she was on

methotrexate and some other NSAIDS when i first met her. she' been off

that for 2.5 yrs now. mostly doing well, almost feels normal.

a month or so ago, she started having swelling in her right knee. for

the last 2 months, she's been on amelopsis and Ulmus, Mn alt with S,

flasx seeds with GLA 90, super EFA liq. 2 wks ago, she called and said

her knee swelling was getting worse. i had her take 2, 11, 48 and it

still didn't help. (she lives on OR and commutes to work from Honolulu

so sees me when she's in Honolulu, she's a flight attendant)

anyway, she called today to tell me that she couldn't stand her know

swelling and pain anymore so went to see an MD in OR who drained her

knee of 40 cc fluid and gave her a shot. (probably cortisone, she

doens't know for sure) she's really cleaned up her diet in the last

few months and has been diligent with the COP on her knee. she knows

better than to get a cortisone shot but she couldn't tolerate the pain

till she comes next wk. she went for 3 acu sessions there but it

didn't help either.

are there any specific number to help with swelling like that? it kept

getting worse even with diet changes and COP. any ideas before i see

her next wk?

thanks

This is a great case where making a diagnosis helps to decide on the proper avenue of treatment.

There is no "right" number.

The question is - what is the right system, the right diagnosis. You need that to move forward.

Hi ,

In your case, #29 for periarticular swelling seems like a good candidate with

#2, also consider #28 if its more in the joint itself. Also you mentioned she

started ulmus and ampelopsis two months ago and started swelling up again one

month ago. I would stop the Gemmos, it sounds like they might be moving too much

and her emmunctories are not open enough to get it out, and continue the Unda

drainage. Is there a latent infectious process that needs to be dealt with?
