Hey friends,

Enjoying all the " name change " dialogue. I am yet undecided.

I will be seeing a 10 year old pt. with diabetes next tues and would

like to be slightly on the ball as to how to approach this, as I

obviously have not treated juv diab before. Both her mother and

brother have died from diabetes at young ages. She is under the

care of an MD. Of course she must be on insulin. Has anyone had

experience in this area? Which is the best insulin for her age?

What in particular should I be watching out for, esp diet? What

labs should be done regularly? I have treated mild cases of

diabetes in adults, however this is a different arena I believe. I

appreciate all and any input. Hope you see this Dick. :)

Also consider checking serum iron. Many diabetics have concurrent

hemochromatosis and a little bloodletting can go far. This was a pearl I picked

up from

Steve Gordon, ND. He practices along with us here in good 'ol Montana up in

Whitefish/Kalispell (sorry, I don't have his phone number). He can be an

excellent resource for the questions you are asking. He is a Type I diabetic

himself and is setting a standard for diabetes management- so much so that he

gets

calls from the conventional diabetes organizations asking him what he's doing

because his patients don't get secondary complications.

Hi

Consider having the child tested for

celiac disease. There was a small study done at, I believe, the University of British

Columbia medical school on diabetic children. About 1/3rd

of them tested positive for celiac. Given the strong family hx in this

case, it may be the root of the problem. Sorry, no time to look for a

reference. I was told about this study from the parent of one of the

children who tested positive in this study.

Hi ,

Since type 1 diabetes is an AI ds, think of starting your treatment like you

would other AI diseases. For me that generally means getting the inflammatory

process under control/balancing the immune response. Diet and the gut are

paramount here - anti-inflamatory diet - especially gluten and dairy free (of

course there are a million others too, but I always start there), and GI basics.

How does her gut look on intake - antibiotic use? vaginal vs C-section birth,

what is she eating etc - these things may help direct you.

I am currently having a love affair with gemmos in paediatric cases I find they

work especially well - their energy is magic and compliance is great. And of

course you probably already have her dry skin brushing and castor oil packing!

I hope all goes well
