Guest guest
Hi all, Billie, I just watched a video on You Tube for raw hummus. If you go to You Tube and search for " raw hummus " a whole bunch of stuff will pop up. I want to try a recipe, as well.  I also want to know what " coir " is, as I don't understand this term, either. Thanks for all your input, everyone. Jess From: sherryskapik <sherryskapik> Subject: salad spinners and pea shoots Date: Friday, January 15, 2010, 6:07 PM  Hi All, My old salad spinner quit working, so I put coir in the bottom and have been sprouting and growing pea shoots in it. It's amazing! I just take the tray out of the bowl, rinse them and put it back in the bowl. Don't even need the lid on top. I've gotten 5 cuttings so far, and they just keep growing back. They are very delicious. And it's like a little bit of spring in the house. Melody, you've got to try pea shoots. Sherry
Guest guest
Ok gang, lets talk about coir. Coir is a by product of harvesting coconuts. It is the fiber that is between the hard shell of the coconut and the outer shell. Is is used in a lot of products such as door mats, etc. As a gardener, I use it instead of peat. Peat is taken form the ground by tearing up old forests. Peat will run out. Peat is slightly acidic. Coir is a by product and does no damage to the environment. It is a never ending supply, as long as people eat coconut. And it is neutral, meaning that it will not affect anything that is planted in it. I also use coir to plant my pea shoots and sunflowers sprouts, but I mix it with perlite. It makes the medium go farther and is cheaper. ew - Master Gardener hint salad spinners and pea shoots Date: Friday, January 15, 2010, 6:07 PM Hi All, My old salad spinner quit working, so I put coir in the bottom and have been sprouting and growing pea shoots in it. Guest guest
Thanks, ew. Where do you get your coir? Do you mix soil with your coir and perlite when you plant your sunflower shoots? Guest guest
I was getting my coir from a local guy. He sold his business and the new owner tripled the price. So I'm looking. Several seed catalogs sell it. Those bricks expand when water is added. I hope I get a new local source soon, I'm down to one brick. Check on line a see what you find. ew salad spinners and pea shoots Date: Friday, January 15, 2010, 6:07 PM Hi All, My old salad spinner quit working, so I put coir in the bottom and have been sprouting and growing pea shoots in it. Guest guest
I don't use any soil when planting sprouts. I have, however, in a pinch. used old potting mix from plants that died. That is, died of natural causes. ew salad spinners and pea shoots Date: Friday, January 15, 2010, 6:07 PM Hi All, My old salad spinner quit working, so I put coir in the bottom and have been sprouting and growing pea shoots in it. Guest guest
It sounds like what I use for my terrariums for my frogs.... you soak the brick or part of it for 15-30 minutes and it comes apart and you have this fiber like soil.
