Strategies to limit pollen exposure, allergy symptoms

Some tips for keeping your allergy misery to a minimum:

-Keep your windows closed, particularly during the day when pollen

counts are high. Likewise, keep car windows closed. Use air

conditioning as much as possible.

-Do a thorough spring cleaning, to remove allergy-provoking dust and

mold that accumulated over the winter.

-Change filters in heating and air conditioning systems every month.

-Limit outdoor activity when pollen counts are highest (in the

morning), humidity is high or it's windy. The lightest pollen grains

can travel up to 400 miles.

-Take allergy medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor, and

at least 30 minutes prior to any outdoor activity. For severe

symptoms, consider prescription steroid nasal sprays, which bring

the most relief for some people. If symptoms worsen or change,

consult your doctor.

-Shower and wash your hair before going to sleep rather than in the

morning, so you don't bring pollen into bed.

-Keep pets off your furniture and out of your bedroom. When the pet

comes in for the evening, wipe down its fur.

-Wash bedding weekly in hot water.
