Re: Mold and Air Quality Testing

Dear Members of the North Garnerville Community:

Over the past week the District has conducted tests to

determine whether mold was present in several areas in the North

Garnerville Elementary School and Administration Building. In most

cases the results were negative, but results in one area of the

school building identified the presence of elevated levels of mold

spores. Those results were received late yesterday. The work is

being conducted by an independent company, Indoor Air Quality. The

area in which these substances were identified has been closed and a

process of remediation has been started. Adjacent rooms have also

been closed. Over the holiday break, testing will continue

throughout the building and remedial procedures will be carried out

as required. Cleaning of all air ducts will be done during that

period. As soon as possible, the District will authorize an

engineering review of the complete HVAC system. Carpeting will be

replaced by tile in areas where we have been advised to do so.

This testing was begun in response to questions raised by several

individual staff members who are concerned about the possible

relationship between health issues they have and factors that may

exist in the building. No such relationships have been confirmed,

but the district is taking the issue very seriously. We will share

new information as it becomes available.

We will keep you informed as work progresses. Students and staff

will not be assigned to rooms in which problems have been identified

until those problems are corrected and re-testing is done. We have

authorized test results to be confirmed by multiple independent

companies. Questions may be directed to me or to the North

Garnerville office at 942-3120.

Sincerely,

D. Monahan

Deputy Superintendent
