AAMC Executive Vice President Knapp, Ph.D., Feb. 27 presented to

staff of the Senate Subcommittee on Bioterrorism and Public Health Preparedness

the results of the AAMC _survey_

(http://www.aamc.org/advocacy/Katrina022706.pdf) on academic medicine's relief

efforts following Hurricane Katrina.

Senate staff sought the input of AAMC and 11 other groups on the

reauthorization

of Title I of the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and

Response Act (_P.L. 107-188_

(http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=107_cong_public_laws & \

docid=f:publ188.107.pdf) ).

The AAMC presentation summarized answers to the member survey on academic

medicine's response to Katrina, particularly with respect to government

coordination and assistance. Emphasized in the responses was the need for better

communication and increased planning to be sufficiently prepared for a natural

disaster or attack. Also provided to staff was the AAMC 2003 _report_

(http://www.aamc.org/newsroom/bioterrorism/bioterrorismrec.pdf) , " Training

Future

Physicians About Weapons of Mass Destruction: Report of the Expert Panel on

Bioterrorism Education for Medical Students. "
