Guest guest
Hi , Great questions and great that you are questioning them... I can only tell you from our brief experience, that Santi was at a 20 something curve at 10 months old. They immediatly put him into a ton brace that he wore 23 hours a day. Within a year he was at 50 degree curve even wearing the brace, even with the brace getting great correction while he wore it..the brace did not stop his curve from progressing. We did X-rays with the brace on and it showed that it was correcting between 35-40%, meaning that it was reducing the curve while he wore it, but in the end when we took the brace off to do the x-rays, his curve continued to progress. In the cast, he progressed 0... I mean 0. He was at 50 degrees and went down to 22 degrees and stayed at 22 degrees the entire time he wore the brace. Now, that he has been out of it for 2 months due to his muscle condition, I don´t know if or how much it has progressed, I am afraid to find out, I just want him back in that cast so that I can feel safe knowing his curve is not moving.. I remember did a questionere about the positions that we have the x-rays done, and I don´t remember the finding. But, I do know that each doctor does it their own way and for their own reasons. I would just make sure that they are consistant in the positions otherwise you will show different degrees, there is a difference in the way the back is when you lay down versus standing up. My doctor agreed to do Santis in the laying position until he starts to walk, once he walks he wants them all standing up..But, I think overall the idea is to do them the same each time. I am so glad you found some great doctors... Take a small hidden tape recorder so that you don´t forget things. Someone else mentioned that before and that was a great idea. I tend to forget some of the things that are said, thus it is great to be able to go back a replay what was said during the visit.. Keep up the good work,, Smiles, Kelli and Santiago <christinehrph@...> wrote: We got back for Erie last night and I am confused at what to do.......I could use all the advice I can get because this one is tough 1st let me say what a great team of medical professionals over in Shriners everyone was happy, and trust me to know that most people in the MD office's do not seem to love their jobs... like each and every person in that hospital ( I still can't get over it) Dr has a great bed side manner He let ME end the Doctor visit yes ME....he sat there like he had the entire day set for my questions...which was was not prepared for...so I was a little lost in some of the conversation.. He took lying down xrays ( we asked for standing but he said NO) he was 20 * cobb and 5 RVAD then in the kaiilbus brace he was 8* and RVAD of 1 I asked him to be put in a CAST but he said he couldn't achieve better correction in a CAST and this was doing what the he would want to cast to do. that 20% of progressive cases could resolve. Adan's original were: April 45* lying down May 30* standing up I worry that xrays are so subjective and can't be relied on. The norm is that braces do not correct curves......everyone knows this even my ortho said they can not stop the spine from growing more curved. I think I should get standing xrays...but we still have this as a result... but what does this mean? OK my problem is.... 1) has any one ever had correction of this amt in a brace then gotten worse? Most stories are of children's getting modest correction then get worse. If I have something to back up this then I can question him Can anyone out there tell me what kind of correction they saw in their child in a brace before it progressed.????? Thanks and any other info you can give me would be great. I am worried that he can get worse ..although if I can keep him at a low angle then at least I know in the mean time he has a chance of growing straighter. While I deal with this info....... We did not however get more correction of the curve. We started in July with a 64 degree curve and RVAD of 31 - after the cast we were at 37 degrees with a RVAD 29. Today the curve measured at 40 degrees but the RVAD at 15. We are disappointed that the curve did not go down but am assuming that we should be glad the RVAD improved. Dr. said that he was somewhat disappointed and that we would have to just wait until the next cast change (December 6th) and see what happens? Have any of you been through this? Is this a set back and a sign that the cast may not work? Thanks for listening and any feedback. Mayes. Do you ?vote. - Register online to vote today! Guest guest
Thanks for the info...That is not good news to hear that the brace was holding him straight and even with that he did not get held straight enough to grow straight. that worries me about my case. Was put into a brace within months of his diagnosis? What kind of curve doses he have? That is such great news to show that the cast did not let it progress even 1 degree,,,,,i the cast can bring him back so have faith that he will be straighter. Where was he getting his casts put on? the tape recorder is a wonderful idea ...i feel funny about it ( if i would get caught) but I am going to go an buy one ASAP : did those results from the xrays poll get posted? I saw santiagos pics on the site he is very cute..... I tried to email you back from the previous time we emailed and I typed an entire message that got lost so I gave up for the day then erased yours...bad luck My husband was born in Madrid his parents are originally from Cuba I would love to take a vacation to Spain again what a beautiful place Thanks for all your info xxoo and Adankelli peasley <santiamor2002@...> wrote: Hi , Great questions and great that you are questioning them... Guest guest
I'm so pleased that everything went well for Adan and that you got such great results. That cast does seem heavy, but I guess they all weigh differing amounts depending on padding etc and I'm sure he'll get used to it and be getting into all sorts of mischief before you know it. He feels that we can at leaste buy her a good amount of time to grow in these casts before then. We are supposed to try to make it 10 to 12 weeks in this cast, which would put us there in June sometime. Is that a little long? or is that typical? She is doing pretty good...she still seems to need infants Motrin from time to time, but I think alot of it is frustration for her. She just learned to crawl about 1-1/2 weeks before casting and now she is so limited, but I'm sure in no time she'll be stronger and mobile again. The diapering is INTERESTING to say the leaste! She has had pooh up the back twice already, thank heavens you can pull out enough of the little shirt to clean and dry it! I have to say in closing that I was very pleased with the hospital and staff at SLC, and I would highly recommend them!...and I never would have found this alternative to invasive surgery without this group, God bless you all, for helping me help my tiny one!Anxiety relived mom is right, LOL :-), mom of Eliana __________________________________________________

I know what to expect and she was helped so much! Dr. D warned me however that with a curve as significant as Eliana's was, she probably will need surgery at some point regardless, he said he was "guardingly optimistic" considering the amount of flexibility and correction attained in the first cast.
