Guest guest
If your pillows really are moldy- it will not be possible to wash them out- think about it the spore must be removed-the pillow- and comfortors that are thick are very difficult to clean- Ikea has very inexpensive washable pillows- and comforters > > > My screwed up memory says pillows and down can both harbor mold. But how much of it? Guest guest
Thanks for the feedback. I do not see or smell any mold...I am just assuming....or at least there may be enough dustmite presence to attract the mold spores ? Currently, there are zero funds for replacement, plus I have to have 100% non-synthetic...more money. Guest guest
I doubt they will survive bleach wash. I would try going to either a very salty wash water or very acidic wash. That would be either alot of sodium bicarbonate, baking soda, or lots of vinegar in water. Better yet wash one time in baking soda and rinse them in vinegar. That's how I take a bath and wash my hair. Baking soda bath and vinegar rinse. What you are doing is taking microbes from one pH extreme to the other. Everything has their own pH that they can live in so if you take them from one extreme to another, you kill alot of microbes. Whether you kill all of them is another question. At Dallas Environmental Center's safe housing in which they deal with mold victims and also MCS people, they only allow people to bring baking soda to do laundry. You may consider replacing pillows for new and washing new periodically this way. If they are real old, there is 'dung' in them. I know that is hard to face up to but insects defecate in the pillow and other bedding that they live in and it piles up if item isn't washed for long time. I heard this on the Today Show or similar new program. I love down also and have them but perhaps cheaper pillows that you wash weekly and replace yearly or something. That's what I may do since you put your face into them all night. --- In , " kattemayo " <kattemayo@...> wrote: > > 64 million dollar question... > How can I wash them to get rid of any spores/mycotoxins? Guest guest
I think I read that down is the best as far as low contamination, lo wmold, but I can't handle it myself due to allergies. I've had good luck soaking my bedding in an alochol/water mixture for 8 hours, then washing in machine. Think I'm suffering from mycotoxins as opposed to actual mold spores. Not sure how goosedown would hold up in the alcohol, though. I had bought a fluffy, thick, mattress topper as my new mattress was too hard, but it can't be washed in the machine, and all of my attempts to spray it with alcohol, ozone it, etc, have failed. I may try to wash it in the machine at some point. At this point, I've come to the conclusion I can only purchase things that can be soaked and thrown in the machine, whether bedding, or clothing; dry cleaning doesn't do it for me either.
