MERRILL, Wis. -- A fungal infection has killed a teenager in Merrill

and sickened six others in Lincoln County in the last two months.

Health officials are looking for the source of the fungus that's

also shown up in Marathon and Sawyer counties.

Tristan Muenchow, 16, was a junior at Merrill High School, north of

Wausau.

She died Feb. 14 of the disease, known as blastomycosis.

The disease primarily affects the lungs and skin. It can't be

transmitted from person to person.

State epidemiologist Archer said investigators will try to find

the source of the fungus by identifying factors that link the

victims.

The state Health Department has alerted doctors in the affected

areas to examine patients with pneumonia and skin infections for the

disease.

I'll bet they trace it back to the school. If officials keep covering

the dangers of mold up, lawsuits are going to be filed for mega bucks

and people eventually will be held accountable for these deaths. When

a child dies lawsuit amounts can be very high.

I have been diagnosed with Blastomycosis. It normally grows outdoors in

decaying vegetation with animal excrement near bodies of water, and is only

endemic in certain places in the U.S. It grows there as a mold. When one

breathes in the spores, it changes into a yeast form in the body, where it is

not contagious.

It does not normally grow indoors, but now take this scenario: A school with

a flat roof with water pooling on top; algae grows on the roof for years and

falls off and lands near air intakes and decays. The roof leaks. So, I would

assume that one could get it from the outside source coming inside, and that is

the way that I think that I got it. I can't think of any other possible

exposures. I think I've had it for several years as it started out as a lung

infection and has now spread to my sinuses, but I didn't know that was what it

was until last year. I am on medication now for it. I guess I'm lucky to be

alive.

But I still fear for the students and teachers at the school where I taught.

They may still being exposed to to this from other parts of the roof that were

not repaired, as well as to the toxic mold that is still in the school.

Kathy, how long did you have it before you received a diagnosis and

medication for it? I'm wondering why it has been able to spread to

your sinuses. Are you getting better? barb b
