Guest guest
I am new to brewing kombucha. I originally became interested as a recommendation in Cowen's book The Fourfold Path to Healing as a way to ameliorate back pain through hydration, and then got excited about all of the additional benefits. However, I just read that it is not recommended for pregnancy and lactation or for children. Can anyone give me more information on the risks of this as I am currently breastfeeding a two-year old. Does anyone let children drink it? Does anyone let children drink it? > Thanks, Dear Tammi, The advice given is that it is unwise to START taking Kombucha during pregnancy etc. although there are no known negative side effects. If, however Kombucha is part of your normal nutrition keep on drinking it. As Kombucha is very diuretic you need to make sure that you drink a great amount of clear water each day. Coffee, tea and Kefir don't count, as they, too, are diuretic (drawing water out of your body.) Especially during your breast feeding phase drink at least 2 litres of water a day. My last child (who is now a strapping 12 year old) was born under the auspices of Kombucha. I think I had more Kombucha than blood in my veins ... ;-) I was still breast feeding him as a 2-year-old But I should not give Kombucha until your child starts mixed feeding, and then only in very small quantities, like adding a teaspoonful with water or juice. From there you can gradually increase the amount and follow your healthy instincts as to how much you and baby consume. If you've already given your youngster some Kombucha, great! I honestly think that Kombucha is a fantastic food for all ages and all sages ;-) Love and happy feeding (I miss it!)
