Guest guest
Okay, let's see if I got it right (once more, lol). I use the pumpNseal to seal up my seeds. No need to freeze anything at any time, because bugs can't live in a vacuum and that's what the PumpNSeal thing does. so far so good. The thing that confuses me with the little tabs that you put on the lids is that when you want to use the seeds, and to open the lid, you have to peel back the tab. So do you use the same tab to re-close the lid, or do you go to that package with the 20 other tabs, peel off another tab and use that one to reseal the lid? I'm not planning on using, then reclosing mason jars when I store them. I'll store about 10 jars, using 10 tabs, and I plan on using one jar at a time. (Oh, that would mean I have to make a salad mix, doesn't it), so I've just changed my mind. Oh, I just thought of something. I could have one mason jar with a salad mixture of radish, fenugreek and alfalfa. I would also have another mason jar of just broccoli seeds. So ever 5 days or so, I would be using two mason jars. So do I use a new tab when I open the lid, or do I use the same tab. I realize you don't know the answer right now, but you have used storage methods so you HAVE TO know more than I do?? also the price is really cool for this PumpNSeal thing. $35 bucks. And thanks for trying to get some answers for me. Much much appreciated. You're a good guy (as are all the gang here at this forum). I would never have learned what I have learned if I didn't come here. Guest guest
Hi All. Look it's up on Ebay for $22.00. Guess what the shipping is $16.95. Are they for real? no way I'll pump by hand if I have to lol Melody > > > > > > there is something called the " Pump n Seal Vacuum Sealer " that is > > popular in raw food circles. Guest guest
Melody,Hopefully the PumpnSeal company will get back promptly to Fred about these questions. Since I am feeding myself, my husband, and about 30 birds, we don't have that much to store, but if I start buying in quantity as you do, I am glad to have the info in the event I need to store them. My goal today is to clean out the freezer to see what I have been " storing " in there since Summer. I already know there are about 10 bags of young coconut meat! The Food Saver would have been nice to have over the Summer :)marion
Guest guest
Melody, I just sent them another email asking about the tabs. As soon as I get the answer I will post it. In my case I do not freeze my seeds even though I have done it in the past. I store them in a cool place except the ones I use from a jar. I got those in the cupboard in the kitchen. I have never had problems that way. I got a month ago 80kg (that's 176lbs) of seeds from Mumm's in Saskatchewan, Canada. I live now in Switzerland. I buy them from Mumm's because I always got the seeds from them when I was living in Canada. Here I haven't found a store where I could buy the seeds, unfortunately, since the shipping is VERY expensive. Thanks for the compliment! I love to share my experiences with sprouts as do so many people on this forum. We need to support each other wherever we can. I believe this will be of utmost importance in the near future. Guest guest
Melody, I already received an answer from PumpNSeal. Here is what they wrote me: Fred, Any glass jar, large or small, fat or tall, round or square, any size canning jar... plus your own pots, pans or bowls and wine bottles. Guest guest
Mel, I would put the seeds into the jars just as soon as they arrived. Vac pac seal them and then put them in the freezer until you wanted to sprout them. Take out what you need, then reseal and put the remainder back in the freezer. I would give the fridge thing a test. I'll check with the college this week. I know they store seeds in a fridge. I'll ask if there is any special prep involved. ew Re: I have a question about storing my seeds Hi. (Thanks n and EW for the food saver info) This is for all of you who have used Food Saver things. I just saw the PumpNSeal on youtube. There are a few videos. It costs around $35.00 which is peanuts compared to the FoodSaver thing. So I'm wondering. Besides pumping and sealing the seeds in a mason jar (do you then put the mason jar in the freezer, or do you put the mason jar on the shelf). And because I freeze my seeds BEFORE putting them in any container, I gather that you would not put the mason jar back in the freezer after using PumpNSeal because of possible condensation. So the correct order of doing this process is . 1. buy seeds 2. freeze seeds 24 hours 3. Take seeds out of freezer, put in mason jar, follow instructions on PumpNSeal which tells you to do the pushpin at the top of the lid), now does this work on Mason jar lids, because the guy in the tutorial was using jam and jelly jars, not mason jars, so before I plunk down $35.00 for anything, I want to be able to use the Mason jars I now have in my cupboard. 4. So if I've done everything correctly, I should have a mason jar sealed with sprouting seeds inside the jar, and I now can place said Mason Jar on my shelf for as long as I need to. Let's say I am 10 mason jars filled with seeds. I don't need to touch the other ones because I'll only be opening one jar at a time (which will last forever) given that I've pumped and sealed many mason jars. So did I get this correct? And now for the second question. Once I have done all this, and I begin my sprouting process and I've sprouted using my trays, can I (and this is a good question), can I put the sprouts in a ziplock bag, do the pump and seal thing (the guy said you can use regular ziplock bags and he gives the tutorial on this), well can I suck out all the air of the ziplock bag containing sprouts, and put in fridge????? You can suck out air in a ziplock bag filled with sprouts and only use as needed, and then resuck out air???. To me, this would EXTEND those sprouts like crazy. I mean if this is a viable scenario. So tell me if I got this down pat. I'm always looking for ways to store my sprouts (both in freezer, and on my shelf (the seeds I mean), and in my fridge (the sprouts!) This is so cool Melody > > there is something called the " Pump n Seal Vacuum Sealer " that is popular in raw food circles. I have no experience with it, but here is the link:http://www.pump-n-seal.com/the food saver looks pretty cool. seems like the one gadget I don't have. Guest guest
Their page says the tabs are reusable, but? With my machine, I vacuum the air out and seal the lid on at the same time. I open the lid by using the edge of a knife so as not to damage the lid. Then take out what I need and reseal the jar using the same lid. Food Saver also has larger container that holds a lot. When I make soup or chili, I always make a lot. I can store one serving in a mason jar or all the left-overs in one of their larger containers. ew Re: I have a question about storing my seeds Okay, let's see if I got it right (once more, lol). Guest guest
Hi Fred: I tried the link. It is not working. I do thank you for ALL the cool stuff about the PumpNSeal. Because I just bought my OSO Fresh containers, I might get this item down the road. I wanted to find out all about it before I bought it. I like knowing beforehand before I get something. Like using a dvr. My friend has one, I still use regular cable boxes. I would NEVER order a dvr without learning how to use it. I went to her house, she showed me. So now I know how to use a dvr, so if I EVER get one, at least I'll be somewhat familiar with it. I have watched all the tutorials about the PumpNSeal. Then it came to the ziplock bag and the guy pulled out this tube thing and attached it and I immediately said " why can't I just put a straw in the ziplock bag and suck out the air??? " I mean, why can't I. I have good lung function. lol I used to have this Reynolds thing but they no loner make the bags for it. That was a good vacuum sealer. And you live in Switzerland?? How cool is that? I'm corresponding with someone in Switzerland. About sprouting!!!! How fun!! Can't thank you enough. I'm bookmarking the sites for the PumpNSeal. I'll tell my family members " when it's gift gadget time " , get me one of these. I mean, these are the people who got me the Flip Video and I use this ALL THE TIME. I mean, how else would I share my videos with you all?? So Happy Sprouting, and keep teaching me stuff. And I'll pay it forward. lol Melody > > > Okay, let's see if I got it right (once more, lol). > > > > I use the pumpNseal to seal up my seeds. Guest guest
EW: I just tried two experiments using the ziplock bag filled with sprouts that is now in my fridge. First I got a straw and sucked. It worked but I don't think it's going to stay that way. Then I took my Reynolds handi vac thing. I took the same bag of ziplock sprouts. I made a little hole, I then placed the reynolds thing over the hole and pressed the power button. What was supposed to happen is that the device was supposed to vacuum all the air out of the ziplock bag. And I know it's not the correct bag but you can't get those bags anymore. So I just thought " Why not make a hole, and try and use the device " What happened?? Nothing happened. Didn't suck anything out of the bag. Oh well, I had to try. lol melody > > > > > > > > there is something called the " Pump n Seal Vacuum Sealer " that is > > > popular in raw food circles. Guest guest
Mel. If you are going to use up you seeds in less than a year, put them in your cupboard. Put them in a cool dry place. Because heat rises, put them down low. My seeds are on a rack on the floor of a closet that is in the very center of my house. Its the coolest spot in my house. I think you're worry about bugs is unfounded. You are buying from a quality seed house. They are not going to have bugs or bug eggs. Yes, you can put regular mason jars in the freezer, just don't over fill. Leave room for expansion. ew Re: I have a question about storing my seeds EW: I can freeze my mason jars? Guest guest
EW: Okay, but I just want to know if I can use my OSO Fresh containers to store the seeds. I don't see why that would be a problem. They are UNBREAKABLE, and that's the kicker for me with arthritis. I drop stuff. So I'd rather use something other than glass, if you get my drift. Oh, look at what I just found out on youtube. I am looking into some manual vacuum pump things on ebay, but this thing looks great. I wonder if this is still available. I'm going to check it out. Not for freezing the seeds but for freezing my other stuff in my fridge. And for storing the sprouts in the fridge. Hey, besides my OSO FRESH, sometimes I use ziplocks and if this thing sucks out the air, well, it will extend the fridge life. Guest guest
Melody,Hey this has been fun checking out all of these storage options. I had never heard of the zip lock pump thingie. Guest guest
n: Today I got very organized. I took all the sprouting seeds out of my freezer and decided to put the in my Lock N Lock storage containers. I bought those BEFORE I purchased my first OSO Fresh. These don't have any silver nanos but they do keep things fresh. So I transferred all my seeds into the various containers, locked them up good and tight and now my seeds are on my shelf nice and safe. When I am ready to order the next batch of seeds (I will have had my deliver of my new OSO Fresh containers by then), I will then add to the collection on the shelf. According to EW, I open the 5 lb cannisters, pour the seeds into the container, freeze for 24 hours, then take out of freezer and put on shelf. They should be good to go. And with the other Oso Fresh stuff, I'll put in leftovers, dried pasta, my veggies, etc. Can't wait. Just call me Mrs. Organized. lol melody > > > > > > > > > > there is something called the " Pump n Seal Vacuum Sealer " that is popular in raw food circles. Guest guest
I haven’t problems with bug either, I just keep mine in a zip lock bag. From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of 99tomatoes@... Sent: Saturday, November 13, 2010 8:08 PM Subject: Re: I have a question about storing my seeds Melody, I have been sprouting for about 20 years. I have never had larvae or any other kind of bug in my seeds. I used to store them in a closet in the bags they came in until a mouse got into my house. I transferred them to quart jars. They are neither refrigerated nor frozen. Please tell us the experience you have had with bugs and where you bought the seed. ew
Guest guest
Melody, maybe you should take that sealer off her hands J To seal a mason jar you use an attachment called a jar sealer. I got mine on eBay. http://www.foodsaver.com/Product.aspx?id=c <http://www.foodsaver.com/Product.aspx?id=c & cid=89 & pid=8060> & cid=89 & pid=8060 Lorri (WA) From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Melody Sent: Saturday, November 13, 2010 8:33 PM Subject: Re: I have a question about storing my seeds Hi EW: What do you mean when you say: " You could seperate your seeds into pint jars " Do you mean mason jars?? You put the mason jar filled with seeds into the food saver thing? I know exactly what a food saver is because my friend bought one two years ago (maybe more) and she's NEVER taken it out of the box. She has stuff from her bridal shower (over 40 years ago) that is still wrapped up and in the back of the closet. I told her to go on Ebay and sell the stuff. lol So a food saver would be good for vacuum sealing the seeds, but ...pint jars???? Guest guest
I never thought of that. I'll ask her when I see her. But my shelves look so nice now. I have the LockNLock containe with all my seeds. Should have done this a long time ago. Guest guest
Sorry, girl, but I did not say anything about freezing them for 24 hours. That is something the pet store clerk told you. Put them into what ever container that you are going to store them in and then put them into a cool dry place. ew Re: I have a question about storing my seeds n: Today I got very organized. Guest guest
Okay, Melody got EW confused with the Pet guy. So is it okay if when I get my next delivery of the 5 lb cans of any seeds, that I put them in the containers they will be housed in, put in freezer (yeah I know that you don't, but I WILL HAVE PEACE OF MIND, LOL), and THEN, take them out of my freezer and keep on my lower shelf for storage. Please, Please, tell me I passed muster, oh Master Gardner!!! lol Melody > > > > > > > > > > > > > > there is something called the " Pump n Seal Vacuum Sealer " that is popular in raw food circles. Guest guest
Melody, just make sure that your containers are filled right to the very top so that as little air as possible is in the container. The less air the less condensation is possible. Fred On 15.11.2010, at 15:28, melodylubart1 wrote: > Okay, Melody got EW confused with the Pet guy.
