Guest guest
A couple of weeks ago I lent an EasySprouter to a friend at work who has heard all about my sprouts. She eats lots of veggies and a healthy diet and liked the idea of sprouting her own. I gave her a small packet each of mixed alfalfa leafies, and broccoli. She loved the alfalfa, and I encouraged her to try the broccoli. When I saw her on Saturday, she told me the broccoli sprouts " stunk up her whole house " ! They were growing fine/clean but she initially thought something was stuck in the garbage disposal. I had to laugh, I had warned her about the fuzzy roots and the brassica smell, but I didn't expect her response. I just LOVE brassica scent! So fresh and pungent. I sniff at my sprouts everytime I rinse them. I'll bring her some lentils and another leafy mix this weekend, and hope she's not been put off. How funny that perceptions can be so different! Guest guest
Molly, I take it that this person does not cook cabbage or broccoli. ew Sprouts with a strong smell A couple of weeks ago I lent an EasySprouter to a friend at work who has heard all about my sprouts. Guest guest
EW, we've talked food a lot, I know she will cook/eat cauliflower, cabbage, etc. An I know the seeds were good (Sproutpeople) and her technique is good (she brought the leafies in to show off). I'm still kinda laughing about it. I'm guessing I shouldn't offer cabbage and radish seeds to her. Guest guest
Recently, I have noted that the broccoli sprouts have a strong smell. Thought I was doing something wrong, though my procedure was the same as before. Just seemed stronger. Would you help me understand that " brassica smell " you were speaking of? Thanks, Phyllis
Guest guest
Hi Phyllis -- I've always found that brassicas have a strong, extravagant but pleasant and fresh vegetal smell. Never " stinky " or overpowering (which is why I was surprised when my friend thought so!). I wonder if it's a summer weather issue with strong smell? at least down here it's been over a hundred degrees outside and correspondingly warmer inside. If your sprouts grew, didn't mold, and taste fine, then perhaps it's just temp + humidity + airflow contributing to a larger scent " presence " . I'm going to start some radish/mustard/cress mix tonight to see if I have an " enhanced smell experience " . I just harvested Sproutpeople's LongLife mix yesterday, which is >50% broccoli, with no smell problem. Maybe some of the board's experts have other experiences with this? Guest guest
Thanks bokashifan! Appreciate the input. We have been extremely wet and very humid this summer. Perhaps, as you say, that is the instigator. Soooo tired of humidity, and more on the way. Grateful it is the fall, and we can get back to cool and dry. I will try that " Long Life Mix " . Guest guest
Hi. I would like to share MY experience with sprouting broccoli. I first tried to sprout it (without adding any other kind of seeds), all by itself, and I never could. I have no idea why. The batches never sprouted as well as when I mixed them with other seeds. And because I eat sprouts MANY times a day, I now just sprout everything all together. I sprout radish, fenugreek, alfalfa, broccoli, and cabbage seeds. I have 7 trays going right now. Because it's 97 degrees outside, I rinse and drain several times a day and now it's day two and already they are sprouting. I put more broccoli in the tray than the other seeds, but they really like to be mixed with others. For me, well, I won't try and sprout a separate bunch any time soon. Too Expensive. This way, I get the benefit of the broccoli sprouts in EVERYTHING I eat. My sprouts smell just fine. They smell like SPROUTS!!! lol Melody > > Thanks bokashifan! Appreciate the input.
