Hello ,

After reading your question about scobys in compost/worm bin.

I asked my friend in Belfast, who I know, has got a worm bin,

and this is what he wrote as an answer:

Yes, I am subscribed to the llist, but no I don't get the e-mails.

So, you can answer this one...

A scoby in a compost heap is fine, but there will probably be problems

with it in a wormery. Worms don't like acidic food, and a Kombucha

culture is more than a 'little' acidic, so it isn't a good idea.

In fact, it is better to keep a wormery a little on the alkaline side

for the health of the worms. This can be done with lime from a garden

centre or egg shells.

I suppose you could neutralise the scoby by coating it in lime first,

but you still run the risk of having too much acid, or too much alkaline

in your worm bin, and they are sensitive. A better choice is a standard

compost heap or a standard bin.

Margret continuing:

As regards scobys on the compost:

Yes, mine consists probably a quarter of old discarded scobys.

The compost harvested makes very good fertiliser for the garden.

The many worms on the compost don't seem to mind the scobys,

as there is a worm city thriving in it.

Hope that answer helps.

squirmfully,

Margret
