Guest guest
Ok, Melody, two different uses for pea seeds. If you do them in your colanders, you are going to get sprouts. Just like all of the rest of your sprouts. You can grow them in little longer and they will get a little taller. For pea shoots, you need to grow the seeds in a medium. If you go back to the link you just sent, you can read all of the different mediums he uses. Any pea seed will grow into shoots. They pretty much taste the same. I grow peas in my garden and always let some pods mature so that I can harvest the seeds for sprouting and replanting next year. It's been more than ten years since I purchased pea seeds When you do sprouts, you have the pea seed still on your sprout. They are a little crunchy, but edible. A one time shot. With shoots, you cut them off as you need to harvest. The peas seed stays in the soil and grows another shoot. I have Asian neighbors who love to go into my garden and harvest the pea tendrils and use them in their cooking. They are tender and tasty. I used my shoots on sandwiches and in salads. I prefer shoots to sprouts. Growing peas shoots is like having a mini-garden in you kitchen window sill. ew - LA County Certified Master Gardener. EW, need your help in buying PEA SHOOTS EW; I just went to Sproutpeople.com and found this: http://www..com/seed/peashoot.html Now, is this what I am buying to sprout pea shoots? And I know they talk about soil less mediums, but you did say I can sprout them exactly the way I do my radish and broccoli sprouts, right? So just let me know if this is what I buy, and then say " Melody, do what you do with the trays, and you'll have pea shoots " . And then I'll be all set. I don't want to purchase the wrong thing and do the wrong thing while sprouting them. It's only $5 and change per pound, but I don't want to get or DO the wrong type of sprouting. Thanks much Melody P.S. Can't wait to taste these. and answer me one thing. Are pea shoots the same thing as when I went to the store and bought GOYA PEAS?? Same thing, or completely different? Because I sprouted the peas and they looked like sprouted lentils when I was finished with them. I just want to know if these pea shoots (when I sprout them like I do my radish, and other sprouts), well, if they will look like sprouts, or like the lentils with the tails? Thanks much Melody
Guest guest
EW: If I do them in my colanders, and they grow like sprouts, can't I take a bunch of them, snip off the pea part, AND THEY WILL BE THE SHOOTS?? or is this not feasible? And if it's not feasible, I gather I can just sprout them, and when harvested, add them to my salads, so they will kind of have the consistency of sprouted lentils?? Did I get this right? thanks VERY MUCH Melody > > > Ok, Melody, two different uses for pea seeds. If you do them in your colanders, you are going to get sprouts. Guest guest
Yes, you can let them get to about 3 - 4 inches in your colendar, snip off the seed and you'll have a sprout. Remember that this is a one time only shoot. If you plant them on a medium, you'll get at least four shoots - more for your seed money. Don't throw away the peas seed and root. Toss them in your soup pot. ew EW, need your help in buying PEA SHOOTS > > > > > > EW; > > I just went to Sproutpeople.com and found this: > > http://www..com/seed/peashoot.html > > Now, is this what I am buying to sprout pea shoots? Guest guest
Okay, NOW I HAVE A REALLY GOOD QUESTION FOR YOU. Let's take this one step further. When I originally bought the round green trays, when I (after soaking overnight), poured the seeds into the green trays, well, every 12 hours, I NEVER MIXED THEM UP, I used to mist them, or lightly put some water over them, and then put them in my drainer rack so the water would run out from the bottom. Now, why can't I do the same thing with the pea shoots. Instead of a soil less medium, can't I just press down the seeds on the bottom of the tray, every 12 hours, do the misting, and as they grow, they will grow UPWARDS, and in 4 or so days, I just take the whole bunch out of the tray, AND SNIP SOME OFF, and then let the rest grow. So instead of the soil less medium on the bottom, there would be NOTHING. When I initially started sprouting, this is what I did. I just never mixed up the sprouts. I had a big bunch of upward growing sprouts. I didn't like the bottom root part, so I used to snip snip, and throw the bottom out. Just a little part of the bottom. But after I watched videos, I learned that it's ALL edible, and I didn't have to do that, so when using trays, I just take my hands and mix them up. But if I go back to the original way I used to sprout, it would be EXACTLY like pea shoots. Growing up up up. Can I do this? Melody > > > > > > Ok, Melody, two different uses for pea seeds. Guest guest
EW: One more question!! WHAT THE HECK AM I BUYING?? I have no idea. I just went to Sproutpeople, and they have pea sprouts, pea shoots, and then they say " you can grow pea shoots FROM ANY PEA " . Then they say " we use speckled peas " . So what exactly do I buy? And here's another thought. Can I do an experiment, and go to the store and buy a bag of regular green peas. Not split peas, but regular peas? And then can I try doing shoots or sprouts from them. I don't see the difference between shoots and sprouts, except that I just read that shoots grow up from the pea, and the roots are under the pea and the pea is in the middle. I just want to try an experiment. Is this feasible? I know it's not organic, but I want to see what I can do. Also, please let me know exactly what I am supposed to buy at Sproutpeople. TO MANY PEAS TO CHOOSE FROM!!!! lol, Melody > > > Don't see why not. Guest guest
Melody, you can use any pea. I use the pea seeds that I grow, which is snow peas, regular shelling peas and edible pea pods. You can go to the store and buy a bag of whole peas. However, they seem to be puny and don't sprout well, but a pound will cost about $1. Give them a try. If you don't like the results, make soup and order sprouting seeds from Sprout People. ew Re: EW, need your help in buying PEA SHOOTS >
Guest guest
OKAY!!! THE EXPERIMENT SHALL BEGIN. I'm going out now to run errands, and I'll pick up a bag of whole peas. We'll see what happens. lol lol lol hugs!! Sproutlady Melody > > > > > > Don't see why not.
