Guest guest
Hello, I should think it would depend on the type of food and the type of plastic. I buy water at a water purification store. They tell me that the lower the grade of plastic, the lower the number on the bottom of the jar. " 7 " is food grade; " 1 " is the lowest. Unfortunately, I've noticed that many foods are sold in " 1 " grade plastic bottles. My water dealer tells me that over time, even food grade plastic will degrade and its polymers will start leeching into the food. Water being the universal solvent, I would imagine that wet and acidic foods would tend to accelerate this phenomena. The health effects of plastics are not widely discussed in the media. There is some concern that chemicals in plastics mimic estrogen ( " zeno estrogens " ) and can cause hormonal disruption leading to some types of cancers: http://enzymeuniversity.com/artman/publish/article_32.shtml Vinyl chloride, a component of some cancers, is a known cause of brain cancer. The workers at plastics manufacturing plants have a higher than normal rate of brain cancer. See: http://www.mamashealth.com/cancer/brainpv.asp Obviously, not everyone who uses plastic is going to get cancer. But when you have a society where thousands of chemicals are used and we don't know how many of them affect the body, prudent action would suggest the use of glass for food storage. Hope that helps, Re: Storing in plastic. Not KT. Milk and vegetables. > >Dear Ones, > >I have been using large plastic coffee cans to store food in. Now I am >wondering if it is safe. Guest guest
Hi MArge Check the recycle symbol on the bottom. If there's a number 1 or 2 there, you oughtta be okay! Even pickles are okay in them, which are pretty acidic Blessings mark Re: Storing in plastic. Not KT. Milk and vegetables. Dear Ones, I have been using large plastic coffee cans to store food in. Now I am wondering if it is safe. I guess large peanut butter jars would be. Blessings on you all. LOve. MArge.

Guest guest
Coca Cola is very acidic. It is stored in plastic bottles and does not react with the bottles. Long term, if you stored an acidic beverage in the bottles for several batches, who knows? Short term I don't think it will be a problem. Glass is definitely safe and takes all the speculation out of it Vince Re: Re: Storing in plastic. Not KT. Milk and vegetables.
