Guest guest
Okay, here's a new one for you. As you know I FREEZE ALL MY SPROUTS. I had made a batch of radish and broccoli sprouts, (more radish than broccoli because the seeds are so different, I can tell which is which. I had several trays up on my sprout rack and I had sprouted these seeds in my BIG sprouter that I converted from being a microwave cover. I just inverted it and it becomes this big round sprouting tray with lots of holes around the base for the water to drain. I place one on top and then I have a big round sprouting tray with it's own cover. And next to this I had my original round green sprouting trays. And I have the exact same seeds in all of my trays. The fenugreek I do in my mason jars. So yesterday I walk over to the sprout rack, I take one of the covers off (of the round green trays), and this GNAT flew off. I said to myself 'how on earth did a gnat get into my sprouts, I mean I FREEZE THE SEEDS!!!! I then came to the conclusion that NOT ALL BUGS DIE WHEN YOU FREEZE THE SEEDS. Am I correct, because one or two gnats (because when I harvested the stuff by putting the trays all around my kitchen sink), well some of the seeds DID NOT SPROUT. These were the radish seeds. When I turned the round green trays over, I noticed that quite a few radish seeds were still intact on the botton of the tray. I immediately washed the trays in sudsy hot water and dried them. Lo and behold, I had 2 or 3 gnats in this area. I can only come to the conclusion that the radish seeds had some larvae in them that hatched (even though they were frozen), and that's why there were many seeds that did not sprout. I mean MANY SEEDS did not sprout. Has this ever happened to any of you? This was a 3rd batch of Radish seed that I got from Handy Pantry. never happened before. I really don't think it was the broccoli seeds that did this, but I'll never know for sure. Today I had to put up a whole new batch of sprouts. I put up fenugreek and I put up broccoli. I DID NOT USE THE RADISH. I want to make an experiment. Any comments are welcome. Thanks much. Melody
