Guest guest
Hi everyone, I found this group via Hyatt's excellent website, and thought I'd pop in to say hello :-) I am 28 years old and live in the UK. I was diagnosed with infantile idiopathic scoliosis when I was about 6 months old (although my parents first noticed there was something wrong when I was about 3 months old). At six months, I had a thoracic curve of 60 degrees and a lumbar curve of about 40 degrees. This was in 1976. I had a series of plaster casts and Milwaukee braces from then until I was ten years old (1986), when I had the thoracic curve fused with a Harrington rod, following halo traction. It got corrected to about 40 degrees. The plaster casts and braces had stabilised my lumbar curve so well that I did not need to wear either again until I had that curve fused at the age of 18 (in 1994), when it had reached about 50 degrees. That also got corrected to about 40 degrees. I think that the treatment I had was excellent; I've had a brilliant correction and no-one can really tell that there is anything wrong with my back now. Bearing in mind that my treatment was a relatively long time ago, I hope that this will help you to all feel positive about the treatment that your children are having, as techniques have improved so much since then! Good luck to all of you, Antonia London, UK

Guest guest
Hi , Of course! I would be more than happy to help you in any way I can. Feel free to email me You might also like to come and have a look at a website that I help moderate, as there are other people there who have also had plaster casts as children, and we have been discussing this today as I was so shocked that they consider a proven successful technique to be " outdated " and " barbaric " . The URL is: http://www.scoliosislife.net - come and have a look at the forums there, and do post a message if you think we can help BTW I believe I have met Min Mehta a few times, as she has worked closely with the surgeon that treated me for most of my life, Mr Edgar. Best regards, Antonia > Antonia, > Thank you for sharing your story!! > I have chills running up and down my body... > Can I e-mail you privately, so we can talk..? > This is the best e-mail I have gotten in a long time.. > I appreciate you taking the time to join the group. Guest guest
Ahhh your children are all SO beautiful! :-) I will try to get some photos scanned in, of myself when I was a child, and myself now. I feel great about the way I look, no-one ever really notices that there's anything wrong with my back and lots of my female friends say they wish they had a figure like mine....if that's not a good advert for the treatment I had, I don't know what is! And considering I had my treatment a long time ago, I hope that this will help you all to feel very positive :-)
Guest guest
Not that I'd notice, no....although I was naturally less sporty and fit than other children. I have decreased lung capacity now (my lungs function at 47%) but this isn't really causing any problems except that I get puffed out more quickly than other people. > Antonia, Did you ever have any respirtory problems as a child?
