Guest guest Posted October 6, 2004 Report Share Posted October 6, 2004 Friends of KT, i've heard that when making KT one needs to get the Chlorine out of the water they use to make their tea, because tap water contains Chlorne which can " spoil " the brew. If one uses water that has been filtered by Carbon filtration, UV treatment, reverse osmosis, and microfiltration ozonation (i don't know what any of these things mean- it was on the label of some bottled watter i bought at Wal-Mart) does this get the Chlorine out of the water? Surely it does, i intend and " hope " it does because i'm handicapped and boiling water can be quite a bit of trouble. Actually it's not the boiling of the water that causes trouble, it's pouring the hot water, and to be able to buy unChlorinated water would make the entire process much simpler and easier. It would be cheeper to get a britta filter, and filter your own tap water becasue it would get out sediment, etc from your tape water. Good for your health too for other usses. But if for some reason you don't want to do that. Chlorene is fragil. People with aquariums leave water in an open container to " age " when changing water, because in that time the chlorine leaves the water. Would do nothing for the sediment and other things floating around in the water, but at least the chlorene would be gone. A kitchen towel over the bowl would help keep out dust while this is happening. You would still have to boil the water to make the tea. Mite I suggest my methode? I had read it here on the list, so I am just passing on the info. I use britta filtered water, and have enough for a batch (10 cups with my recipe). Then I boil 4 cups of water to make the tea. I pour the boiled water into a boal with 5 - 2 cup tea bags, and seep for only about 4 - 5 minutes. Remove the tea bags, add 3/4 cup sugar. Stir well to desolve. I make sure the jar I make the brew in, is VERY clean. Swish vinigar in it after you wash to get rid of any soap or other residue. Then I add the 6 cups of filtered water into it. Pour the finished tea. This cools off the boiled water well, so not to harm the scobbie. Add 1 or 2 cups of the prior batch. (If it is your first batch - use the liquid your scobbie came in). Then last I add the scobbie. If you have difficulty with any of my suggestions (perhaps I was not clear) get back to me. But at least my adapted way you are not dealing with 2 gallons of boiling water. 4 cups is more reasonable.
