Guest guest
Dear Greg, I have always trained external rotation in abduction to bias infraspinatus, though this is as you say conflicting among the literature I have read. I check several anatomy and biomechanical texts before writing this reply, and they make no comment. One reason I can think that you are having trouble with your bench may be poor posterior stability of the glenohumeral joint. This is just an idea, I could be very wrong here. The infraspinatus and teres minor effectively " back up " the posterior capsule. If they are deficient and you are lifting very heavy loads, maybe the jumeral head is gliding posteriorly more than it should during the lift? (Sounds like a dodgy theory to me - but it's the best I can do at the moment!!). I'm not sure why your LT's haven't developed. I have always said that with correct form they fire automatically. I feel that abductions with elbows flexed, and only going to 90 deg., using a mirror to ensure good shoulder position strengthens lower traps more than seated row, which is middle traps, rhomboids, lower traps, lats, erector spinae etc. --- Epsley PHYSIOTHERAPIST Northside Sports Injury Centre Brisbane, Australia. e-mail: physio@...
