I completed my first challenge in 2001, and another in 2002. I lost

around 50 pounds total, and have managed to keep it off for 2 years

now!

So, here is my question: I am now 6 months pregnant, and have so far

had a very healthy pregnancy, gaining only 8 pounds. However, at my

last doctor's visit, I had trace amounts of ketones in my urine,

which means there could be a slight insulin resistance.

I was thinking the best way to monitor this would be to follow the

diet I used for Body For Life, and I was just wondering if anyone

knows how safe and recommended it is for pregnant women.

Thanks in advance!

I would definitely talk to your dr. about it and get his/her advice. I

didn't know about BFL while I was pregnant, but I would assume it's OK as

long as you keep your calories up. So you might be eating bigger portions

than palm/fist while pregnant than you would be if you were not. I would

have to assume that the same goes for doing BFL while you're nursing, but

I'm not a health care professional, so go ask your Dr.! And let us know

what he/she says because this question has been asked more than once.

Thanks!

Hi there and congratulations!

BFL food is fine during pregnancy, but do keep your intake at a

maintenance level, not a loss level. Also, no supplements (apart

from pre-natal vitamins). I personally didn't even do protein powder

last time I was pregnant due to all the artificial sweeteners, but

this time I have found one that only has stevia in it and despite an

exhaustive search on the internet, (which scared me off aspartame for

LIFE), I can't find any indications that stevia is unsafe in

pregnancy. Since there are doomsayers about just about everything, I

will take that as a good sign, but still only have protein powder

once a day just in case! :)

Good luck with your pregnancy, gestational diabetes is a worry. :(

Hopefully, slight insulin resistance is all you will experience,

especially because BFL style eating ought to keep your insulin

responses to a minimum anyway.

Oh, and just in case, BFL exercising is definitely NOT recommended

during pregnancy. Hitting 10's and pushing for new highs are a big no

no, but you probably knew that.

All the best

The diet is safe for pregnant women, but do not use the supplements when

you're pregnant. Only your prenatal vitamins... and other vitamins/herbs

that are indicated for pregnancy. (Be VERY careful because some herbs can

cause miscarriage, etc. so always thoroughly research anything you are

planning to consume during pregnancy.
