Guest guest
Hi Carol, Have you read about paleo food? I find that eating grains, flours, dairy product, sugar etc give people a lot more health problems. Eating a very simple food diet like meat, fish, poultery, vegetables, fruits and nuts. Plenty of healthy fat is good like coconuts oils. Staying away from veg oils and other oils that are cooked at high temp. Might be worth reading about it, you still have occasional treat but what you eat most of the time is important. We don’t get ill at all (four of us in this family) and when my partner get ill it is because he been have porridge with milk and other floury food that are not paleo! Cheers Gail. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of homeschoolmomtosarahandbethany Sent: 15 December 2006 05:39 Subject: Foods for immune boost Sorry to have so many health related food questions. This week has been a real whirl wind for us. My daughter had a sore throat for a few days and then she got a fever for two days and then seemed to recover, except she hadn't fully regained her zeal and has reddish eyes. She is pretty easy going and it did not occur to me she might be very sick. She did not seem terribly sick, but complained of a horribly sore throat. My husband a few days later after dd had fever got ill, took two days off work which has NEVER happened before, and continued to feel awful after that. Finally, Saturday he felt sooo bad I took him into urgent care, with kids in tow, and he tested positive for strep. At this point, given dh symptoms matched dd's, I assumed dd had fought off strep successfully and I was bewildered that dh got ill because he never gets sick, never gets colds or flus but maybe once a year, and even then, it tends to be very mild. So today, my other daughter began to complain her throat hurt. This child is the type of child that really wears one down, and so I took her in to the Dr today, rather than trying to ride it out and see if she would recover on her own. She too tested positive for strep and is now on antibiotics. So they want to put my first daughter on antibiotics too. Even though she obviously is much better. Here is my first question. Should I let them put first daughter on antibiotics? The Dr said something about rheumatic fever, which seems very unlikley to me. Question 2, I am now the only one here who has not got it. I also accidently drank from second daughters drink (with a straw) yesterday. I do not want strep nor can I afford to get it. Other than a traditional foods diet, vit C, zinc, magnesium and probiotics, is there any other specific thing I can eat, supplement with or do to prevent myself from coming down with strep? Question three, I am frustrated here. Our health improved dramatically when we went to a traditional foods diet. Yet this is our first time getting strep in this house ever. And the fact that dh sucumbed to it is amazing to me, as he did not get ill even before the traditional foods diet. He also got ill a month ago with a horrible respiratory infection that lingered for two weeks. Again, that is unheard of. The kids are sneezing to boot, and we exposed to a stomach flu this week as well. Normally, I do not worry if they are exposed to bugs as they usually do not get it, but right now, I am a but concerned they will come down with it. Ugh. We have been eating soups cooked in broth, raw milk and healthy meat. We also have been eating nutritious fruits and vegetables and only whole grains. To be completely honest, our diet has not been sugar free (for instance we had maple syrup on whole grain pancakes today) but we have not increased our sugar intake and perhaps it has even decreased. I just do not get why we are sick. Any input? Thanks and sorry so long. Carol F -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Guest guest
Carol, Some food for thought... I understand your frustration. First of all, nutrition is only one part of the picture. Are you controlling your stress? Are you exercising? How are your family members doing spiritually? What is their environmental exposure? Also, I sometimes have to tell myself that the goal is NOT to never get sick (although that would be convenient!). The goal is for our bodies to be able to handle it-not become ill OR fight it off quickly, not experience complications, and most importantly, not DIE!. Some believe that children being exposed to different viruses and bacteria " exercises " their immune system and that they are healthier for it. Sort of letting your child play in the dirt... As far as treating with antibiotics...certainly it is to be avoided. At all costs? I'm not there yet. I did treat my youngest daughter for strep once, because she was so sick that I found her laying in the hallway. I was scared, and there didn't seem to be any other options at the time. In your case, I would ask what the risk of rheumatic heart disease is in someone who appears to have recovered. They may also talk to you about her becoming a carrier. You will have to decide. Hope that helps a bit. So, stick with it, you are on the right path. I believe the " problem " is that we can't expect perfection. And can you remind ME of this in about 6 months or so??? Guest guest
Hi Carol, We have monthly maintenance with our chiropractor. When we have been sick in the past, a couple of extra adjustments have allowed the body to heal quickly. From the time my kids were newborns, we have had them adjusted. We do not take antibiotics or vaccinate. Strep throat is painful, but again, an adjustment worked wonders. Also, since you are eating so well and continuing to make good changes, your family may be detoxing and that process is not always pleasant and often has similar symptoms of illness. Our chiropractor is Sheehan with Family Health Trust, 952-933-4427. He is not far from where I live. He practices the Palmer Method which is not widely done. If you talk with him please mention my name as he is always happy to get referrals from his patients. Guest guest
To add to the many great suggestions you all have made, if you aren't doing some kind of fermented or cultured food on a regular basis, you're not giving the support to your immune system that it may need. Real sauerkraut, real kimchee, kombucha or any of the other fermented foods Nourishing Traditions book has recipes for. The key part of that first sentence is on a regular basis. Several times a day is a good idea, need it or not. When I do get sick, which isn't very often, I seem to come out of it much more quickly. There's always the story of those birds in Korea with avian bird flu. I think it was 11 out of 13 survived after being fed Kimchee. Guest guest
Thank you everyone for your fantastic suggestions. Some I was able to implement right away, others are a long term thing to implement. I guess we will know tomorrow if it worked. The incubation is 5 days and I drank out of my dd's straw 4 days ago. Thanks for blessing me! Carol
