Subject: Organic Fruit Fundraising?

Hi all,

I was intrigued when I learned that there are several citrus growers (some

organic) who also run fundraising programs. The company will send

promotional materials and help the group through the whole process.

I was wondering if there would be enough interest through TFMN to warrant

setting up a small group of people, to collect orders and to unload the

truck when the ordered citrus gets to town, to distribute them and so forth.

It seems the minimum order would be 200 boxes and the profit margin is set

by the group, typically 40%. The money raised could be directed wherever we

want to, such as a deserving organization or farmer needing help with legal

bills or whatever, (or just set a lower margin) and give all the people who

order a break on organic citrus costs and the remainder for TFMN swap meet

costs or whatever. I know for sure, I would love to order some fruit and I

would be absolutely delighted to help out as a volunteer, such as helping to

unload the truck and I would push this fundraising thing on the people in my

life. Talk about fresh citrus for Christmas and for a good cause! Yum!

Here is one site with typical information.....

Hey Alvin!

Personally I do not know if we would have enough time to pull this together

for this year if we wanted Christmas delivery. That would be disappointing, as

that is what I really want! But anyhow if we wanted to try it with the delivery

left open, we could. Or just wait until next fall when we feel more " together "

and have more time to line up our ducks.

I really think that if there was very little margin mark-up, those boxes

would FLY! The main hurdles as I see 'em are: 1) Where does the truck

deliver to (it will be a huge truck) and choosing a somewhat central location if

people are to pick up their orders (or spreading out to secondary distribution

sites), 2) Help unloading the truck (10 people probably as the driver will be on

a time schedule) and 3) Short term storage out of temp extremes- perhaps over

24-48 hours- as people pick up their orders. There would probably be lots of

help with distributing (especially if they are " paid " with citrus ;-) There

would be 1% overage from the company in case of damage but if unused, then put

them to pure profit or to " pay " volunteers with.

People would prepay- that would cut out the big initial payment.

Let's get to it, people! Do you wanna have yummy fresh picked citrus to

hand out at Christmas time? Yum! :-P

This seems to be a very healthy idea! Can we put our heads together to

find a way to handle the 200 box quantity? Perhaps I could suggest it to our

Lions Club for an inclub fundraiser or just a group purchase. I'd have a refir

truck (insulated against the cold might be just as important) and short term

storage space for whatever doesn't find a home immediately. Alvin

I'm interested but it would depend on cost, time and space needed.

please keep me in mind.

Hi Sara,

I would agree that it would be too bad if this chance were to be put on hold

till '07. If we wait until all our ducks are in a row, it'll never happen. I'm

going to check out what kind of price this 7/10 of a bushel will go for to get

an idea what the load of 200 boxes will cost. If we can plan for a mid December

delivery date, we've plenty of time to find enuf interest for this quantity. I'm

not worried about moving and storing this small amount of produce. I'll update

the group with more details as they are available. If someone has more info-

please post asap. Alvin
