Not food-related, I know, but another thing that I find very

disappointing is that a large number of the Amish around my family's

place in WI use disposible diapers.

I suppose I can't really blame them, considering the hand-washing

angle. But then again, there is always EC...

Arleen,

Sorry if you were offended. I have great admiration for the Amish. I am just

afraid that they may be going the way of the world.

Yeah, Arleen, I think I may have started this about the Amish but I've seen no

intent from the

group to hurt or bash any one or any segment of society. We are ALL looking for

the best way

to live and part of that is finding different groups to study and, in some

cases, emulate.

My Amish comments come from the true shock of discovering that they have so many

health

problems. We can all aspire to their work habits, their desire to live without

cars and

electricity (now there's a great idea!), their family connectiveness and their

connection to

God.

Incidentally, our AcresUSA conferences have hundreds of Amish and Mennonite

families

attending almost all of whom raise and sell organic, sustainable and

grass-finished food.

Many of them are far ahead of us.

I¹m going to Autism One May 25th and Dan Olmsted (who wrote the article) is

one of the speakers. I¹ll share anything I learn.

Arleen,

please forgive me if any of my statements were un-kind. I just know how saddened

I was to see the Amish children walking to school and so many of them looked so

un-healthy. I guess I just assumed they ate healthier than many of us and stayed

away from more worldly foods and such.

The Amish I have met near Pine City (This was a good 15 years ago) were so

robust and healthy! The women and children had healthy tans as well as looked

fresh and well rested. I just assumed this was the Amish way. The ones I saw

near my dd's looked so sickly (a little over a year ago). Pale, grayish looking

skin, huge circles under their eyes, which also looked so sunken in. Just looked

so ill.

I thought maybe they were an order that the girls wear the larger bonnets (as

they all had on black full covering ones) and did not get as much sun on their

faces but the boys had the same look. Their caps do not cover the whole face and

they should get plenty of sunshine. Once in a while you'd see a healthy robust

child, but it was not the norm.

Seeing these children (at that time, before NT and Trad food days) made me think

that they were not getting the nutrition they needed and it seemed surprising to

me. I guess I stereo typed all Amish as staying away from the worldly foods such

as Mcs. Made me sad to see this and also to hear of the changes some are

accepting.

Some days I think how much better off we all would be with out some of the

" modern " convinces we have. Horse and buggy, no chemically raised foods,

naturally fed meats..... The good old days! Traditional foods and living.

funny,

I was at whole foods one day and I wanted to buy a

whole chicken and I scanned the case not a single

organic meat selection. I asked why this was. The

meat counter guy said " No one buys it , and it ends up

going bad. " They had chicken labeled " amish " I asked

him what that ment and he said " you know the amish use

no chemicals and do everything naturally. " haha silly

silly whole foods.

Hey- there are no absolutes in the world! The same applies to the Amish! Some

of them DO vaccinate. It is not common but does happen. There was a study back

a while back when there was a small outbreak of autism in an Amish sect and

unfortunately enough, it was confirmed the majority of those who HAD vaccinated

in that sect HAD autism. That was a very clear link between mercury and other

undesirables in vaccinations setting off autism. I think I saw that when I was

educating myself about vaccinations on mercola.com. The great majority of the

Amish do not vaccinate, but some do. Like Kathy says (hi there Kathy!

;-) they are going the way of the world, which also includes succumbing to the

" wiles " of the world in various ways, vaccinations included. :-(
