At last ! I am glad to have finally negotiated the intricacies of joining

the discussion group and to contribute to the interesting discussion which

has emerged.

I agree with 's comments - a constitution would highlight the role

of Senate and allow us to work effectively with other groups who have

related interests e.g. UK Standing Conference on Health Visitor education

and also to avoid accusations of competition.

In addition to the letter prepared by for the Community Practitioner

journal, the steering group agreed that a discussion/position paper should

be prepared which would explore the issues currently affecting health

visiting and school nursing. This could be made widely available through

publication, circulation etc and would help to further raise the profile of

Senate's activities and to stimulate debate. Somehow I managed to agree to

act as the person co-ordinating this paper ('s persuasive ways, I

fear!). The discussions taking place within the forum are obviously helpful

in preparing this. I would however like to hear from as many people as

possible regarding any issues that they are encountering.

Please let me know either through the discussion group or via my email above.

many thanks!

Welcome on board!

I had a phone call from Neil Hamilton today in response to the letter.(for

those who dont know editor of Community Practitioner) Would I write a page

for the journal on this new thing called a Senate and what was it all about

anyway? I told him it was about getting the buzz back into health visiting.

Of course I said yes! He was more interested in the article than the letter

and the article would go into the August edition. He was interested in the

idea of using new technology... an e-group was news worthy definately wants

that in the item. So I guess we can stick with LSL for July if thats OK

and then be prepared for the deluge in August. Well thats how it feels we

should go forward. Does anyone have any suggestions about future venues. The

steering group are interested in sorting that out but it is problematic

because of the cost of charging for a venue. (I did have that kind of

feeling of 'YES' when I came off the phone - know what I mean!)

delighted you could join in we missed you! Persuasion is a lovely way

of putting it however if you spot that someone has the talent for something

you just have to ask and so I did. Thank you for taking on what I regard as

the first really important task. Please dont think you will be left with it.

We have lots of voices out here that I am sure would be interested in

helping out.

Some ideas to be going on with -

What about the dichotomy of government wanting so much of the health visitor

in recent DOH publications - leader of teams, supporter of families etc etc

but at the same time the strain is still being felt in terms of cutbacks to

the service. for example Croydon lost £205,000 last year from their

community resources. Manpower loss was startling.School Health Service was

decimated. They have recouped financially in this spending round but only

because of the brohaha created by the Community Health Council. Anyway the

point is if there is a point that it is easy to make lists of what is wanted

of the service but much harder for the service to deliver if they fear

redundancy or cutbacks suffer low morale and feel undervalued (Croydon &

Cambridge)

Also as discussed at the steering meeting concerns continue about the

position of HV registration.

Also there are concerns about issues around training of HVs within a nursing

framework.

I need to stop here and let someone else get a word in. thank you

once again.

Dear

some thoughts for your paper - my suggestions is that we try to link it to

policy and look at what that is saying in terms of how HV and SN should

practice in the future. there is a real move toward the more community

based health promotion and support away from the one to one.

So how will this effect practice and how can we make the cultural moves.

From work i have been doing in primary care it is clear that management is

so busy surviviing that the idea of needing to make a major change is not

yet with them or indeed they do not have time for it. You may say HVs

should do this themselvesbut of course they will mnot unless empowered to -

and my experience is that they are not. This is the real policy practice

gap I think. On top of this there is also an education agenda and again I

am finding that training departments and health authorities do not have a

clue what is needed.

Also into this we need to bring the PCG/PCT and the need to get the GPs on

board. They are going to loose their cosy attached HV because we are not

going to have the resource and so it is improtant to get them on Board.

Another thought is how we do all this has to be flexible because soem areas

are natural communities and others are not.

I have been doing quite a lot of work in this area and have many thoughts.

do give me a ring if you want to discvuss further - 01252 681513.

Margaret

CONSTITUTION

The constitution that we discussed and agreed at the summer meeting is

attached; comments welcome. As a result of developing this constitution

we need:

A TREASURER Toity was willing to be nominated for this role (does that

still stand Toity?). Any other volunteers?

A MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY: There are currently two up-to-date (electronic)

lists: one ‘hard copy mailing list’ of address labels and an

accompanying Excel file with all the addresses and most email members

on. These need maintaining (particularly the address labels) in

conjunction with the treasurer, once the system of collecting an annual

fee to cover the cost of mailing is under way. Any offers?

A third person (or perhaps third and fourth, working together) would be

a very helpful addition, to do two things:

1. Maintain a Word file of all the emails as they come in, in order to

prepare the quaterly/2-monthly digest. This is currently a very lengthy

chore, and really needs someone who would be sufficiently disciplined (I

am not!) to save each email into a Word file as it is circulated. This

exercise is needed to separate each current message from its

predecessors. My automatic system for saving emails as files

incorporates all the attached previous messages, resulting in a 2 month

digest that was originally 187 pages long; eventually reduced to about

30 when all the duplicates were removed (very time consuming!)

2. Once compiled, the digests need photocopying and posting to the

‘hard-copy mailing list’ There is a float that is sufficient to cover

the next mailout, but after that, only paid-up members will receive hard

copies.

I am very happy to continue to advise about compiling the digest, but I

cannot undertake to do the whole thing again.

Finally, all it takes to become a steering group member is the

willingness to volunteer and to help out ; we do not have a date for

another meeting, but with all ’s hard work I feel another ‘chat

room’ meeting coming up to discuss the proposed public debate!

Many thanks for agreeing to be treasurer Toity. Please will you liaise with

Margaret, who has a small float of money to hand over?

Any volunteers to help with copying/posting out hard copies of the digests to

the 'hard copy mailing list?' I think this should go along with a flyer

advertising the public debate, once those details have been finalised.

We still need a membership secretary to maintain the address list as new

members come in. Or do we abandon the idea of a 'hard copy mailing list'?

Yes I can try and be around! The only thing is that at 7pm I think the

system slows down a bit as everyone is logging on but let's have a go

anyhow! So have a cup of tea or a glass of wine beside you.

I'll be in the chat room at 7pm, technology etc. permitting. I think we need

to check out

- progress about the planned public debate in November

- set dates for some future meetings (e.g. February, May) so people can have

dates in their diaries. Once we have dates, we can plan to recruit speakers or

whatever other ideas people have.

- anything else?
