Guest guest
Dear Lorraine we have always offered our HV course full time, but the half time route is also an option. The school nurse and practice nurse routes of the Comm Specialist BSc do run as both full and part time routes. The anecdotal experience is that the part time students fair much better than the full time and this is felt to be due the fact that they have more time to make that difficult transition in to the community role. We do have one student who be returning next year part time on the HV route, but it will be a new expereince for me as the supervisor. So I would be interested in the how it has gone for others Whittaker University of Central Lancashire Preston Whittaker Senior Lecturer Dept of Primary & Community Nursing Greenbank Building University of Central Lancashire Preston PR1 2HE Tel: 01772 892734 Kwhittaker1@... >>> JOOMUNls@... 06/15/01 03:36pm >>> The University and one NHS Trust in Wales will be piloting a part- time health visitor course along side our full time course from this September. Would appreciate some dialogue with other institutions that are offering part-time training for health visitors. Lorraine Joomun
Guest guest
Lorraine, Yes we run a full and partime route. Although the partime route works for those with no other options due to domestic circumstances I do not recommend it as a first option. The Trusts are not overkeen as it ties up a CPT for 2 years and the student is not obviously available to join the workforce for that time. Also as we run a modular system, and only some modules have practice hours attached, there is a potential break in practice during which time students really have to maintain some practice contact in order to maintain confidence and competence in practice. Students who have no other option are happy with this arrangement but I do discuss the whole course in detail with prospective students who are considering the partime route so that they can make an informed choice and many take the fulltime option. If you would like any further discussion please feel free to contact me. Guest guest
We have had the facility to offer the course P/T ever since the programme was modularised. It is however rather more difficult for HV students in many ways as the practice element which is so new for them is so protracted. In our experience it certainly helps if students have worked in the community already, preferably as HV assistants or school nurses. Another problem is the size of the total cohort and the nos of students on the PT route. Being in a minority of one is extremely difficult in a group of 40 for eg. Having said that, it is clearly a good option for those with family commitments who only want to work 2 or 3 days a week but less good if they plan to do another job on the spare days, though it does of course depend on what that job is. Students certainly need to be prepared to be as flexible as possible, particularly when the programme is modified from year to year which it has to be to keep up with ever changing govt requirements. Overall then we here at SBU believe it should be an option but need to recognise it is not an easy or essentially preferable option and generally our purchasers agree with us. Do ring if you would like to discuss further. Frances Appleby, 02078158014 Good luck!
Guest guest
Lorraine, At UWE, Bristol we offer the part-time route for all pathways and it has always been a popular route.Of the pathways however fewer HVs have accessed it because the Trusts have not been so keen to sponsor for 2 years but those HVs who have done it have done extremely well.I have found that if the personal tutor carefully monitors the situation and the student is clear from the outset that it is not going to be an easy route and that they need to keep close contact and communication that it can work very successfully. Those students who are determined and committed can make it work for them. Hope this is helpful. Guest guest
Lorraine - we have offered a part time health visiting option for the last 5 years or so. This is evaluated very positively generally although there have been some issues along the way such as ensuring a coherent practice experience. Do get in touch to discuss further if you would like to! Best wishes Knight. >The University and one NHS Trust in Wales will be piloting a part- >time health visitor course along side our full time course from this >September. Guest guest
Dear Hayward, I would enjoy a good debate on health visiting - education and public health/child services strategy as I am very unquiet about these issues in our area. My eamil address is ruthngrant@... and I would appreciate contact. Regards, Ruth mehayward wrote: > Ruth, > Thankyou for your kind message. > I would be delighted to see you again.
