pregnant wife advice!?

we just found out my wife is pregnant! She is not exactly a health food or

traditional food

person. she admits herself that she doesn't know how to eat. She literally gags

eating any

fruits and she only eats corn and potatoes for " veggies " . i juice, but she can't

get the stuff

down. She does supplement with a whole-food concentrated fruits and vegetables

worth

10 servings, but what else can we do?

Also, from a natural health care position, what should we do? We don't take

drugs and

don't want to do things medically " traditional " . Any suggestions? basically, if

there is

anything you can share about being pregnant and not wanting to use conventional

methods, I would love to hear it. Thanks!

I think a good way to start on a healthier diet is kefir smoothies. I make mine

with frozen fruit like strawberries. Place the desired amount in the blender and

add kefir to cover and maybe a bit more than that. Blend well. Then add some

sweetener, like honey, blend again and Walla, you have a smoothie.

After a while you can start adding more to them like raw egg or coconut oil.

You can buy it at the health food stores but I make my own. I have kefir grains

and will bring some to the swap on the 18th.

Kefir is made from milk, preferably raw whole milk. Here is the best site I

know of that can tell you the hows, whys and goodness of kefir.

This site will tell you more and better than I can. ;-) I do know my gut health

is better now since I started drinking Kefir than it ever was.

Hi Gabe,

I highly recommend you and your wife use a midwife (or team of

midwives) for all prenatal care and delivery. It's useful to have a

bona fide OB/GYN on board if you have a high-risk pregnancy or

delivery, but the chances of medical intervention and a generally more

" medicalized " pregnancy, labor and bith are much higher with an OB. In

my opinion, of course! I can also *highly* recommend a doula for labor

and delivery. Let me know if you are interested!

Freeze dried raw liver capsules if you can't stomach the real thing. Dr Rons is

one brand, I found a cheaper kind on vitacost.com Ideally, fermented cod liver

oil, but if that is out of the budget, a quality dha supplement. Brazil nuts,

(soaked and dehydrated if you can) like 2-3 a day for the selinium Eggs! Be safe

with eggs from unkown sources/regular grocery stores and eat them cooked of

course, but I always at my eggs soft boiled or sunny side up from my CSA. Canned

salmon is great. St Dalfour has some great canned 'meals' with salmon that are

good cold or hot. (also on vitacost.com) Bone broth If she gets queasy or

dislikes yogurts, other lacto fermented things, etc...then don't push it. I had

a big adversion to dairy and other lacto-fermented things the first trimester,

but by the third I ate them with gusto! If you do want a traditional drs

office/going through insurance, but still laid back/self directed type care, I

had very supportive nurse midwives through HealthPartners, I made decisions

about what I did and didn't want at my appointments, etc, there were only a

couple required blood tests to be eligible for a water birth at Regions, and I

had a good all natural water birth at Regions with my husband helping me in the

tub, the midwife was as hands off as I wanted her to be, but very verbally

supportive and directing when I wanted her to be...all in all I am satisfied

with my births with the Health Partners midwives. I have heard great things

about the birth center on Grand Ave in St though! (I was interested but my

insurance didn't cover it)

Hi Gabe,

I'm 12 weeks pregnant w/ #2. I'm a bit further along in the learning curve but

here are some ideas:

- amazing greens has a chocolate powder - she could mix it in with milk if she

can tolerate it. Whole foods in st. paul often does samples of it in soy milk

in front of their salad bar.

- nettle tea / raspberry tea - read up on teas for pregnancy. She could douse

it with lemon juice/honey to make it " palatable " (i enjoy it straight

- this is definatley not trad fods but look into orgain - it's a premain drink

for protein. i like chocolate and mocha.

- eggs! soft boiled in salad? over easy? scrambled with coconut oil?

- raw cheese! yogurt with honey, etc. (calcium)

- does she like ginger? ginger beer, ginger candy, ginger tea... stock it

because if the nausea comes, even 1t in anything can help. I made a

concentrated ginger beer brew that i kept in the fridge and just tablespooned it

out into anything for the first 10 weeks as needed.

- If she's not addicted to junk food, her taste preferences will mold to her

needs. for example since #2 was born i've esssentially dropped milk. A few

months ago tried to finish my toddler's glass and found it disgusting... i'm not

drinking 10 oz+ a day - my body wants the calcium. Not sure how i can do an

entire 180 but i have. I also LOVE veggies (always have) and just a few days

ago i really find the idea of eating them quite distasteful. A bit concerning

but i'll go with it.

Otherwise, it doesn't sound like it's in her pallete but if she can just reach

for a fruit or carrot stick, etc. That is HUGE. Make some homemade ranch or

blue cheese dip for her to dunk into.

Those are just some random thoughts.

sounds like serious mineral deficiencies Go find a CCN or an ND and

figure out what nutrients are missing, how to help restore the gut and

digestive capacity. Bone broth would provide good nourishment in the

interim -- good old chicken soup with ginger grated into it would be a

place to start.
