I know exactly what you mean. I am now 18 months post-PhD and have got

several of my thesis-based papers out as well as some other stuff which I had

hanging around.

Help may be at hand. I understand from one of oour professors here that the

DoH has recognised this problem and that they are considering a strategy to

provide a route for people like you and me to use the skills learned and have

some kind of job security and a salary whch is reasonable (whatever that

means!). Apparently it is due out " soon " .

Many many congratulations on your success!

Best wishes

, very many congratulations on successfully completing your PhD; your

abstract sounds very interesting and topical. There are resonances with two

studies that I have underway at present, and I would very much enjoy talking

with you about it at some point. Have you tried contacting the editor of

Community Practitioner, if you that is where you want to target a

publication?

I do recognise your frustration though, and am not surprised that two other

'like minds' have already responded. I am the 'afternoon speaker' at SIGET

(SIG for education and training) this coming Saturday 7th October talking

about the continuing hurdles involved in 'building a programme of research'

with myself as example (I'm still building; not built yet!). Issues of

funding are a perennial battle, and it remains the case at every stage of

development that the time taken (sometimes years!) to develop funding

proposals is, itself, unfunded. It is a crazy system, but not unique to

nursing. SIGET usually allow non-members to attend the afternoon speaker

session, at 2pm at CPHVA headquarters if anyone is interested.

One of the things I have recently picked up on is the possibility of funding

for 'research seminar discussion groups' from ESRC. The proposal is due in

at the end of November. It is a bit late tonight, but I will fish out the

details and post them. Perhaps we should try and go for it, because then we

would be able to get some administrative support and plan meetings ( a

minimum of three a year are needed, with the prospect of published papers).

I think it might be good if we could have six meetings a year - three for

academic research and three for practice based topics. Would anyone be

interested in collaborating on this? What kind of practice topics would be a

popular focus?

best wishes

I would be interested. I'm in the second year of my PhD developing a new model of clinical supervision

based on an ethical friendship. I look forward to hearing more from you, also I'm at the CPHVA conference

if you'd be there to meet with

what great news. I didn't know. I hope all goes well in the final stages. We

will

soon have quite a collection of HVs with doctorates. I wonder if there might be

a

value in forming a group to support people as we/they make the transition.

Dear , , , Toity et al.,

I saw the ESRC call as well and I really think we should try to put

something together. If we could get some meetings funded then

we could, for example, draw up a programme outline, put together

some joint proposals, put together a paper etc on the need for

career pathways for HVs and other community nurses who have

PhDs etc etc. Lets do it!

Dear All

As as non-practising Health Visitor with a PhD now working as a

Research Fellow in Primary Care, I would be very interested in

helping with your bid to the ESRC. I'm sure the absence of a career

structure for community nurses with research experience was

identified a while ago by the MANT report (97/98?).

Dear et al,

Good luck with the ESRC- the Small Area Research Group here at UCL is

planning a multi-disciplinary bid, too. Meanwhile, two sources of

funding for HV/SN research occur to me:

1. the Health Action Zones are offering short term (6 month)

Fellowships. While Cardiff does not yet have a HAZ, nearby bits of

England do.

2. NHS R & D are about to advertise Career Scientist posts in Public

Health, up to 5 years post-doctoral funding. Prof. C. ,

Northern & Yorkshire Regional Director of R & D and lead on the NHS R & D

workforce described these in a talk to the RCN's centre for policy on

nursing research this June 27th. If the Career Scientist pilots for

Primary Care in 1999 are anything to go by, it it most important for

clinical researchers with PhD.s to negotiate EARLY ON with academic

'centres of excellence' (King's? Nottingham? Manchester? **) to

prepare the case for a Career award: both the person and the research

environment are crucial !

All the very best,

Woody.

** P.S. the International Centre for Health and Society here at UCL

is a " five star " environment, if HVs/SNs are interested....

I find this very interesting. Back in the early 1990s when the Department

were first developing a reseach strategy, cowley, shelia Twin and

Myself met with them as representatives of the HVA. At the time we pointed

out the need to give special consideration to nursing and especially to

primary care nurses who were undertaking reseach at higher levels

identifying anumber of issuess including this one. We were the only

organisation that wanted somethignseparate for nursing and were tole we

lived in a multi disciplinary era and that we were wrong to single one

profession out. De ja Vu again I thibnk!

SArah,

I am sure you are right about the Mant report. mant was the research

and devleopment director at the SW Regional Office fpr some of time I was

there as the regional nurse. He and I used to talk about this problem and I

flagged it up with him on many occassions as I was aware of the problems

people like and others I knewhad experienced.

He is an academic GP by background and now at Oxford - he might be a useful

contact and ally.

The project officer job will be with East Somerset NHS Trust and South

Somerset PCG. It follows on from a piece of work I have just completed for

them reviewing their health visiting service. One of my clear

recommendations was that if they were serious about developing and changing

health visitng practice then they needed soemone external to do it. They

have obviously taken this on board. It will include working to help

properly implement integrated self- managed teams. They think they need

someone full time but I am goint to suggest someone three days a week as

knowing the Trust if they employ a full-time person they will get sucked

into other thibgs and become of the system. I thibk it is important the

project office remains separate.

It is likely I will continue to do some work for them supporting the

projexct officer and doing some facilitation and development with the whole

PCG.

If you would like to talk more about it do ring me on 01252 681 513 - I am

in all weekend and most evening thiscoming week.

projects,research and papers

I have attached my thesis summary for the list. Since getting my PhD

in July in Cardiff I'm going through what my daughter refers to as a

post doc 'fund dry' period!

I did a process to outcome study of the interpersonal skills to

promote health in health visiting within the question of why this

type of activity is difficult to evaluate. I am currently writing

papers from my thesis and working up a follow on proposal and looking

for opportunities to use my research skills.

I'd like to discuss what to write up for the Community Practitioner.

Who should I talk to?

Its a crazy system when one has developed research skills alongside

health visiting and can't direct them until you also secure the money

to fund further research. There were some comments a way back on the

list about doing more research in health visiting but my feeling is

that unless there is a clear career path through education and into

community practice that nurtures and supports aspiring nurse

researchers through links to appropriate resources it will always be a

bit of a hit and miss activity.

I value the SENATE list to keep aware of current issues and welcome

ideas from members about funding sources and research priorities

within the effectiveness/outcome field. I am especially interested in

the views of service users on outcomes and the congruence between

these and other stakeholders' views.

, I'm interested in your reference to research needed to evaluate

the DOH health visiting/school nursing development programme. Can you

give me a contact for further enquiries?

Could Margret Buttigieg tell me more about the project officer job or

who I can contact? I was in at the beginning of the review of health

visiting and school nursing in Wales at the scoping stage with

reporting the response from the CPHVA, Wales.

If anyone knows of projects that want research/evaluation support, do

put me touch.

Dear ,

Details of the 'Health Action Zone Fellowship Scheme' are on the HAZ

website at www.haznet.org.uk . It is important that you make contact

early on with a specific Zone, who will back your bid. The deadline

is close (October 20th) but the forms are short.

Good luck,

Woody.

Dear Margaret and ,

Fiona Ross, Professor of Nursing at Kingston University, wrote the

nursing chapter of Prof. Mant's second (1999) report on R & D in

primary care for the NHS Executive. Fiona might make a good ally for

the ESRC proposal, or at least agree to comment on a draft proposal

for the SENATE ?

Good luck,

Woody.

That sounds like a good idea. I have no preference about time and

location (except that the train service from Nottingham makes it

impossible to arrive before 10.30 am on the 19th)

Thanks

That sounds like a good idea to me. If there is a shortage of space, we can

use our place which is about 15 minuttes walk from the conference centre.

the bar might also be a good alternative!

very sorry not to be with you all to discuss the ESRC

proposal at the conference. Count me in for future

discussions. I have a copy of the information and forms so

can discuss as you go via e-mail if that helps.

The good news is that I have a research job in the academic

Child Health dept. here at UWCM (temp, 6 months) working

on social and educational outcomes of 'shaken baby'

syndrome. Am also continuing to work up a proposal on

users views of outcomes in health visiting in the Nursing

Research Centre.

Beat wishes to all
